An interesting start to a story. The backstory as it were for what is about to occur.
The flow is good. The images are clear. The language fits the situation. The whole thing has poor and institutional written all over it.

Poor and institutional? Not sure follow that. Can you elaborate? Just curious.

I draw a thin line between poor and destitute. Wearing worn out shoes without socks and the soles separating to me says poor, not destitute, but poor. And the rules and punishment of Hermitage Hall is institutional in nature. Neither of these things are necessarily bad, just observable. Hermitage Hall would make one either a bit submissive or a bit rebellious the way it's described.
That is the tone I get. Sorry if it is not what you meant.

Nicely done. Not sure younger readers would know what going postal is. So might want to spell that out more (unfortunately lots of recent events to choose from) but outside of that I thought this was terrific. Your story was very interesting. Excellent pacing and very enjoyable.

I'm glad you found it again, I would love to hear about your life growing up, I know your fictional stories reflect the longing in your heart to "belong", as any of us do, but I likewise know that even if one does, they dream of a more ideal one, but dreams are for the human soul, and the hope dreamed of by us.
