This is a very interesting and informative piece. I learned a lot. What about a trilogy, though. I have started my second book and have tried to keep a summary of the first book, chapter by chapter but I seem to be rewriting the first book in the summary. Any pointers as to what to remember and how to remember them. Thank you for sharing and have a great week.

If you keep the salient plot points handy from the first book - the things that really matter - handy as a reference guide you should be okay. Each book should roughly follow the same basic principles. G

Thanks for this post, G. I'm doing a structural edit of my last novel at the moment and your suggestions will prove most useful. I appreciate the time and trouble you are taking to share your hard-earned knowledge.
By-the-bye, I was most interested and greatly entertained by your interview with Terry. Splendidly done.

Hi tony,
doing the interview was interesting. I generally don't like to give too much away about myself! lol
Terry is pretty good though and asks specific questions tailored to the individual rather than the more generic ones.
Many thanks, my friend. G

My dad always used to say "Keep it simple stupid." Which has never been easy for me. I usually make everything so complex that even I can't understand it. Then, I ditch the whole thing and start over. Thanks for sharing.

It can be difficult keeping all the threads tight so everything doesn't unravel. there's lots of methods to do this but, as with everything, you have to find one that works for you. I tend to hold everything in my head. I'm a bit different though. lol Many thanks, Ric. G
Looking forward to your interview. G

What a great teacher you are! I learned a lot from this piece. In fact, I printed it out so I can use it as a reference when I need it. Have a wonderful day/evening. Shirley

Although I've written short articles, my typing and imagination is at the very elementary level, poetry satisfies my particular skill of trusting whatever dwells in me, and together with God's help makes me a dictation receiver. But one of the reasons for writing was/is my songwriting abilities. Beautifully written G, blessings Roy

Wow! This is a lot to digest. I'm bookcasing this for future reference. Thank you so much for these lessons in writing. I'll keep trying to write a good story.

Question about using a real place. I have before, but in the novel, I'm writing now, I'm worried about naming an actual place because of legal issues. Can that be a problem? Thank you for sharing this. It's a huge help.

Towns and places are completely fine. Where you might come up against issues if it is a specific shop or business, especially if viewed in a not so great way. Many thanks G

There is so much in this piece to learn from. You have obviously constructed it especially carefully. If I could have my three wishes, I would ask:
1) That you join Brett's Tips 'R club, to spread more of your wisdom
2) That I had a printer to make a hard copy of this post to stick on my "thoughts" board next to my desk
3) That you will enter the Harry Potter's Birthday contest (based on your initial example. The subject is obviously to the front of your mind)
Thank you very much for this great read (even though I am now not ready for my afternoon out). Kate xx

hi Kate,
I'll not be joining that particular club. In my experience some other folk mistake their opinion for fact and vice versa. Some folk take advice regardless and a lot of it can be bad advice, so I stay clear of those issues! lol
I hate Harry Potter!
All the best

Opinion versus fact... an extremely interesting philosophical question that takes up a lot of my time. Except when I turn deliberately, I tend to deal in fact (at least it seems so. But it used to be a fact that the world was flat, so who knows what fact and truth is, really). Sorry to hear you hate HP, I find him very amusing, but not top of my list.
My latest research results tell me there should be a new post from you available now or imminently (must just write. At the beginning of the year you said you were aiming to post more this year - I think [opinion] the results have more than lived up to your declaration. Kate xx

Wow. Did you type and write this, or did you paste it from an earlier post? That's a lot of information and by golly I hope someone will be patient in reading the whole thing.
