Your Grandmother was an amazing woman, Beth. I
remember the post about your Grandfather. I could
see everything you wrote about your GM. Your examples
were awesome. Many people today would not know, or
maybe even believe people actually lived like your
grandparents did. I could easily tell how proud your are
of them and their influence on your life.

I'm glad I got to be around people who were willing to live like that but I'm glad all that work wasn't expected of me. I think a lot of Amish people still tend to live like that. I really appreciate the review and comments.

My grandma was the right mate for my pioneer type grandpa.
A Excellent Helpmate
Ah, what very interesting write about your Grandmother.
To me its amazing not having the modern ways that we now have to achieve what your Grandmother had to do.

Thank you Gert. I'm glad you found the story interesting. I loved the way they lived when I was a child and most watched while they did the work. I'm glad I don't have to live like that.

It's always so interesting to read these stories about ancestors, Beth. Your grandparents were naturally hard workers it seems. I can relate to many of the activities your grandmother took on, but the cotton picking is something I've only read about. Well written story. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Judy. I'm so glad you found it interesting. As to the picking cotton, you're not from the deep south. It is most done by machines now. People have been trying to invent these machines since the 20's. John Deere came our with a better version in 2007. The cotton grown now is a hybrid that allows the bolls to develop higher on the stalk and to all mature about the same time.

You're welcome, Beth. Thanks for sharing this further information with me. We used to see trailers full of picked cotton along the cotton fields when we were in Arizona.

Awe, Beth, this is lovely, I could just imagine you as a five year old girl, enthusiastic, and stubborn to boot. It put a smile on my face. Thanks for letting us have a peep into your family. Ulla:)))

Thank you Ulla. I was pretty stubborn, but I raised some kids that had me way beat in the stubborn department.

She certainly sounded like a superwoman. Believe it or not I have always been like that as long as I was physically able. I did keep very busy with work. I miss those days. It seems as though everything we love about life is slowly taken from us as we age. Well done, Beth. Nancy:)

I'll bet you were a superwoman, Nancy. I certainly had energy for doing a lot than now that I'm older and everything hurts. I wasn't planning to get old but I wasn't given a choice. LOL

Thank you for sharing this memory. I know you children and grandchildren will enjoy reading and much as I did.
I hate the fact that before my grandma died, I didn't learn to tat. A year ago, I stopped by a cotton field by Victoria, Texas and helped myself to a small bit of raw cotton so I could show my first graders what it looked like.

Thank you for the review and comments. I didn't learn to tat either. Grandma tried to teach me. It takes patience to learn that I don't seem to have. She could move that little shuttle so fast. She did me to crochet a bit, and my mom tired to teach me to knit. It is tedious and boring. I'd rather paint pictures.

That was a lovely story, Beth, you had a wonderful childhood with your grandparents. I have, too. I didn't realise that the cotton was on sharp stems, a bit like roses and blackberries, only the cotton fluff was nice to jump into! And you earned your first pay packet! Your grandmother would certainly put today's grandma's to shame, me included!! I really enjoyed reading this, Beth. Well done. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you for the great review. When the cotton matured the bolls became hard and opened in such a way there would be about five or six sharp pointed edges around the cotton. It was like briar or thorns. I'm glad we have memories of happy childhoods.

What a marvellous thing to share, I only met my fraternal grandmother once, she was a forbidding woman with a set of keys dangling from her apron, we lived with my maternal grandmother with mum and dad and two aunties, never met my grandfathers, dad's dad was dead before I was born, beautifully written Beth, thanks for sharing, blessings Roy

Thank your Roy, I appreciate the great review. I sure there was a time when you grandmother was a gentle woman. Sometimes life hardens people. Part of the time my maternal grandmother lived with us and shared a room with me. I'll probably write about her next.

I really enjoyed this, Beth. I suppose I am of the generation that can appreciate the hard work of my grandparents as well. Plus, I am from Alabama and know the work of cotton. I, too, preferred to spend my time with my grandparents. My grandfather made mops, and I would play in the huge boxes of yarn that surrounded the mop shop.
You are a good story teller. Please keep sharing your memories.

Thank you for the nice review Debbie. I enjoyed you comments and I'm pleased you liked my story. Times have really changed and I wouldn't want to go to that way of life, but I'm glad I have the memories.
