This is a touching story. It is inspiring to read about a genuine hero like William Edwin Dyess. True bravery when he stayed with his on-fire P-38, crashing it where he knew no other lives would be lost while sacrificing his own.
In 1957, had the privilege of meeting a USN Commander who had been through the Bataan Death March. Showed me a waist-up photo of him, covered with scars.
I was only 5 when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. All the relatives came to our house for a War Conference. My Dad was 39, but together with all our relatives, enlisted in the US Navy and Army, in January, 1942. My Dad was gone 3 1/2 years and was a different man when he came back.
Thanks for this.

That was my last post, thank you for reading my work, Terry.
Comment from GARY MACLEAN
I almost didn't read this piece because of its length; I am so glad I decided to go ahead.
Bryce Parker
2nd sentence; probably should an 'a' between 'on' and '4'.
What a 'rip'. Forced to resign over going to a concert and having fun? I could see it maybe if he had worn his full-dress uniform and still wore the Alice Cooper makeup, but the colonel's action was totally unwarranted.
Ben and Nell
Wow, ok, Ross Perot. Name dropper or something. Quite the acquaintance.
Oh my gosh. Just came out and asked Ross Perot for ten million dollars. That is some Moxy! What is more fascinating is that she got it. I wish I had friends like that.
Edwin Dyess
Very compelling. Heartbreaking but spirit lifting at the same time. This guy must have been a real patriot, to sacrifice his own life rather than risk the lives of those in the 'heavily populated' area.
What is even more astonishing, I'm sure there are more stories similar to this. Very interesting, even in its brevity I could grasp the impact of the tale. Well done, thanks for the entertainment.

Thanks for the edit. There is another WW II story I posted a week ago, The Creator's Hand, an unknown story, you might find interesting. Thanks for the read. Terry.
-
Can we access older materials? I am new, so I really don't know and haven't really tried.
-
You can, click on my name look at my portfolio, and scroll down a little bit to Creator's Hand. Terry.
-
I did just that and I noted that I have already read and reviewed your most recent three submissions, which includes 'Creator's Hand'. I believe I gave that a 5 star as well
Good stuff, keep it coming.
-
LOL, Thank you again, Gary! Sorry about that, Terry
-
No prob. It must be I like what you are doing. Thanks.

I found your three part story very interesting and well-told. All these people were amazing in their own ways and various interests and accomplishments. Thanks for sharing these stories.

Beth, that is my last post. Thank you for reading my work. Terry.

I'm sorry to hear that. I was just turned on to your work. I'm 84 and I'm getting started so I think you're too young to retire.
Comment from Lilly Flowers
Oh, dear, Brice getting caught in a picture. I'm just thinking how much more magnified this type of situation is with young people posting all sorts of things on the internet.
Captain Dyess was a true American hero. I think WWII brought out the best in Americans and in our country. This was a very engaging story and well written. Best regards, Lilly

Comment from Shirley McLain
I enjoyed reading all three of your stories. The only thing I ever heard about was the Batan Death March. Everything else was knowledge added. You did a great job. Have a wonderful day. Shirley

I found your set of three stories quite fascinating and well written. So they weren't free to pursue their own leisure activities while not at work? Going to the rock concert was not doing anything illegal or disgraceful. Thanks for sharing.

Comment from Alcreator Litt Dear
Dyess is Dyess for sacrifice for his country; now we remember the truth - each and every action has its own reaction; again we find how life intersects and makes action goes with equal and opposite reaction; well said, well done; post god speed more; positively encouraging editing, negatively not wording, forgiving errors of theist-good authors-writers. These are three very enjoyable stories. Your job certainly introduced you to an interesting group of people. Bryce must have known a tattletale. No one could recognize anyone in that much makeup.

I hope you don't mean last "last". I would really miss your writing.

Please don't say you're going away.

I am retiring. Thank you. Terry
-
That doesn't mean you have to retire from writing, does it?

Hi Terry, thought I would take a break from writing thank you messages and be refreshed by your awesome stories! And what great stories they were. Fist of all, these were all magnificent people in your life. I can't believe Bryce was made to resign because of a concert that he dressed up for, but I' m sure that the controversy with his prestigious job could have looked bad if the public had gotten wind of that. Ben and Nell seemed like lovely and driven people who were no strangers to the celebrity side of life. And Nell was a woman who knew what she needed and was willing to go after it. I remember Ross Perot vaguely, but knew he was very wealthy. Didn't he run for president as the 3rd party candidate? They certainly lived a long and full life!
And your story of Nell's brother, William Dyess was a remarkable hero, that deserves to be in the history books and should go down as one of the bravest men of that era. I was totally absorbed by these stories and how these people intertwined with your life as well. Fascinating read Terry, and a very enjoyable break from an unnecessary worrisome day, thanks to you and a few other awesome friends here. Thanks so much for sharing this, as your life seems to get more amazing with every story I read. I try never to miss yours, because I always know I will always be amazed!

Debi, this is the last story I will post. I am still going to be on FanStory, but just reviewing and I want to create one more contest later in the year. Thank you for the generous reviews. Terry.
-
Terry I wrote you a long message asking what made you decide to stop posting your lovely stories?
And although it makes me a little sad, I am thankful thankful you will not be too far away.
-
Debi, Think of me as retiring, I just passed 76 a while back, I am the longest living male member of my family and the last one for that matter. So I am retired! LOL. Terry.

Your pride and your patriotism is showing, my friend. You did a helluva job blending these stories and showing our commonality. Once more, I am amazed at your contacts with great people.
The notes I took while reading are included only for your interest in seeing another writer's way of looking at the material. You can get along without making any of these changes and it still keeps you very securely among the best biographical writers on Fanstory.
Ben joined the United States Navy in 1943 and volunteered for duty in the Pacific Theater. [One thing I'd suggest here is to add the "had" before joined. That's because you have already been talking about Ben, and now you are going back to a time before that.]
General Douglas MacArthur retreated from the Philippines. Captain Dyess elected to stay with his men and continue the fight. [To me, this would be more effective as a comparative with "While" before "General" and a comma instead of a period after the first sentence, joining them.]
Along with a hand full of other soldiers, [Along with a HANDFUL of other soldiers ...]
I'll be looking forward to the remainder of the series. I'm thrilled you decided to stick around longer before taking your vacation from us.
