This is the sweetest story. So sad, how some people treat these poor animals. Then, if the animal turns on them, they can't believe it and don't understand what happened. I think it is admirable of you to take in these animals. When my husband was alive, the same thing would happen to us. Every stray that someone picked up, they brought directly to my husband at work.

Thank you for reading and the six stars. It is sad how some treat animals and still call theirselves human. I have seen some really bad situations after being on the farm for 30 years. Hugs.

I love this story --- partially because it is a version of my story! My husband and I made a 'no-dog' decision after our 18 year old Shih-zhu passed on. We agreed to keep a puppy for our daughter only until a good home could be found. 14 years later, my husband is gone, but the dog is still with me!
Your imagery is great and the feeling comes through loud and clear. You have my vote. ann

Thank you. Wow, your story does sound a lot like mine. I bet you would be lost without your little dog now. Pup is 12 and hope she sticks around for a few more years. Hugs.

Nice story. well told.
Just one question - is Gordon Gilbert still your vet? Nuff said.
"We intend to enjoy ..." - You and the cats?
Best wishes and good luck in the contest.

Thank you. Yes, Gordon Gilbert is still my vet. He gives Pup her shots every year. Gordon did surgery on Pup last year to remove a tumor and did great work. By the way, Gordon is older than me and still going strong. Hugs.

Any dog and cat owner will respond to the puppy adoption story this writer published. The author's use of ordinary prose is skillful and thorough so this story's brevity is very functional. We all live within a sea of loss, and this reality becomes more and more present as we age. Pets are a wonderful but paradoxical solution, for they too are to be lost.
We must steep ourselves in the present as much as we can.

Thank you for reading and the six stars. Also, I thank you for your words of wisdom at the end of your review. It's sometimes hard to remind one's self to remain in the present as we age. Hugs.

My husband and I said the same thing when our beloved dog died.
Less than a month later the absence of little pads on the floor led me to a depresses, snappy little Chihuahua - still snappy but no longer depresses and much loved.
Loss of family members whether animal or human is very painful and traumatic.
You tell it well.
Warmly,
Juliette

Thank you for reading and the six stars. Yes, it is hard to lose a person or a pet your life is entwined with. It is a fact of life we all must face at some time. I'm glad you found another dog to lavish your affection on. Hugs

Dear mystery author,
Indeed, at your age, life would be empty without Pup and those little adorable cats. And what a lucky dog she is for ending up with you, an animal lover and a caring person. I can only imagine how they make you happy and busy. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you for your kind remarks and the six-stars. Pup is slipping quite a bit this year. She is 12 now and age is catching up with her. I will miss her dreadfully when she is gone. Hugs.

I used to name cats and dogs like that .Just dog or doggie and cat or kittie.
I loved reading this.I am a diehard fan of cats. But now I can't keep them because i live in an apt complex where they are not allowed...
I wish you manymore years of pleasure with the four legged friends

What a lovely story, and how wonderful that you took Pup in and gave him the love and care he desperately needed. That the cats loved him too, is wonderful. I can understand you loathing of people who just dump their animals, without the slightest feeling of guilt. This was a beautiful story, and it should do very well in the contest. Well done and good luck! :)) Sandra xx

Thank you. Pup is a her, not a him. The two cats (Mutt and Jeff) are boys. I do despise people who abuse or abandon animals. I would like to take them out in the middle of nowhere and dump them off. Hugs

Isn't bit amazing? Dogs find their humans like humans find their angels! When we most need them and against all odds! B pretty b sure God has "Tinder" for dogs! He swipes right and we're all in!

Thank you. Yep, I think you are right. It was fate that brought Pup to me and there is no way to escape fate. We have been happy together for 12 years now. Hugs

Sorry about my typos! It was very VERY late!

I enjoyed this tale of the 'last' dog and how she came into your life and of course brought joy with her. Sometimes fate plays these little tricks on us and we just have to accept it was meant to be. Sounds like those vets had you well figured out!
Like you we had a debate when our three much-loved dogs all passed away within six months of each other and we considered the problems of having a lively pup as we were both aging. However, my wife soon talked me into adopting a new fur baby and we wouldn't be without Womble, now four years old.
Your story is well constructed and error-free and should do well in the contest. Good luck.

Thank you. I love the name of your dog and I love hearing other folks stories about their pets. Yes, Once I looked into Pup's brown eyes I was lost. Those two vets do know me very well. Gordon still takes care of my animals and he is older than me. Hugs.
