L'chaim to Rube, and all who stand up to motherfuckin' bullies!
I'm pleased this very well told story won recognition for you when it was told publicly to an audience - the more people who hear this message the better.

I think I remember hearing L'chaim before. Maybe in Fiddler on the Roof?
Thanks so much for reading and reviewing this story, Lisa.
L'chaim!

Well done Captain Jack. That's quite a story indeed. I would imagine that if you've had to deal with ignorant people most of your life, you would come up with a game plan for most any situation. I was at the Rein Mein air base in Frankfurt awaiting a flight to England to pick up my ship. I was nineteen at the time. Myself and some other sailors had lots of time on our hands and spent part of each morning in the bunks playing cards or reading in our underwear. We didn't realize the cultural differences until we took to the showers and the cleaning ladies walked right in unannounced. Talk about a mad grab for towels. Thanks for sharing your story.
Blessings

Hah, yes I remember similar cultural differnces over there. I kind of liked the German mentality, for the most part.
Thanks for reading and reviewing this story, TB. I do appreciate it.

I was particularly interested in your anecdote, as I was based in the NATO headquarters in Reindahlen during the late 1970s. I never came across any discrimination of that sort, though the British soldiers weren't particularly popular because of their drunken and abusive behaviour at times. I guess that the moral of your story is that the best way of dealing with bullies is to stand up to them. Nicely written.

Hey TF,
I recall running into some British soldiers over there in Germany. What a lively bunch they were. I guess we were there the same time. I was in 1977÷1980.
Take care

Hello Captain Jack,
Nice piece of Biographical Non-Fiction beautifully depicting the post II World war Germany, especially the personality of 'Jewish Rube' looking cool but having the heart of a 'LION.'
Impressive wording; captivating flow throughout from the beginning to the end.
Picture enhances depth and beauty of the story.
Interesting Indeed!
BEST OF LUCK in the contest.

Was stationed in Ansbach, by Nurenburg. Some pretty decent people there. "Rube" handled the situation the only way it needed to be taken care of. You should.have been proud of him.

Glad to see you back Captain. Having also been stationed in Germany, I think I especially enjoyed your post. Funny how so many folks didn't want to talk about certain things in the past. I was Vietnam era, so one awkward situation with me on a trolley when a large German guy asked if I'd killed any babies lately? My answer, no, killed any Jews lately? In my case, a fight did ensue! Some other German guys I didn't know helped me kick the crap out of the guy.

Bill! How ya been, man. Great to hear from you.. Yes, I'm not on Fanstory so much anymore either. Trying to get back into it.
Hey, your experience on the trolley had the making for an excellent story.
Hope all is well with you and your family. You're a good guy.

I drop into FS rarely. I wrote what I thought was a good novel. Covid shot me out of the water for book signings, so has been difficult to market. I try to market some work outside of FS, but short story market is a tough one. Anyhow, great connecting again!

If I had a six-star left, I would place it as a rating for your story. I have had several relatives in the service, and they never wanted to talk about their service days. I am glad that you are able to discuss your life with others.
