You did a great job, Judi, with your addition to the book. Your words are clear, and readers have no problem understanding your message. Your research is evident. I heard the phrase about smoke smoke . . . but not the official song. I litened to it, and understand at one time cigs were popular. Your image choice is perfect.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

The book is getting quite a collection of idioms. I didn't know about nails being designed like that. I don't know how the women wear them. They're so long, how could they do anything?
-
They don't. They have staff. 😊

This was very well done, judiverse. Your words provided rather profound knowledge of the terrible habits of years gone by. The picture was superb and the video was amazing. Sadly I enjoyed reading this one.

Thanks so much for your review and comments. I was surprised that people knew of the dangers of smoking that early. judi

It's been around for forever. You are most welcome, judi.

I certainly didn't like the coffin nails style for fingernails. I don't know how they could do anything wearing them. judi
-
Oh that would be yukky!

I enjoyed reading your essay and learning the many definitions of "coffin nails," including the new trendy one for square-cut fingernails. I will always use the idiom as Joe Pyne did, to refer to smoking cigarettes and the end result--lung cancer. A well-researched essay that is both informative and entertaining.

Thanks so much for your review and comments. I wouldn't want anything to do with those coffin finger nails. I don't know how you could do anything wearing them. "Coffin Nails" in reference to smoking was the only one I'd have heard of. judi

I've tried to get my sister to quit. Nicotene patches didn't work. She ex-plained that the situation is largely psychological. Nicotene patches plus sincere desire to quit equals success. She doesn't want to quit. I'm almost ashamed to admit I'd never heard cigarettes referred to as "coffin nails"! Your writing is very good--informative and descriptive.

Hi, Janice. Thanks so much for your review and comments. It is true. People have to want to quit smoking in order to succeed. My parents didn't smoke, but I had aunts who did. judi

Ha ha ha, thanks for the mention Judi and I find the use of coffin nails to refer the greasy french fries appropriate too. When I was at school, we had a trip to the Wills Whiffs Factory where they manufactured cigarettes and before we left we were each given a pack of cigarettes which we smoked on the coach going home. We were only 14 at the time! Smoking was encouraged because of the huge revenue it brought in for our country and the government taxes. These coffin nails have been responsible for so many deaths over the years and I had no idea this idiom was used as far back as 1860! It took us a long to time to learn that smoking is not a good idea. Much enjoyed, wish I had a six for you, love Dolly x

Hi, Dolly. Thanks for your review and kind words. Everyone could use a little publicity, too. I'd never heard of Coffin Nails being used in reference to fingernails or French fries. I couldn't function with finger nails like that. I was surprised to read that people were aware of the dangers of smoking even back in the 19th century. judi

I tossed in smoking some 38 years ago, my mother ceased at the same age. By the way, I believe the famous "Marlboro man" apparently succumbed to luck cancer I believe. Yes I'm glad I gave it up, although was driven by religious zeal, but whatever the reason...it's good, I watch the old movies with lots of actors smoking, notably Humphrey Bogart who died of throat cancer. So beautifully written Judy, blessings Roy

Thanks for your review and comments. I never smoked and my parents didn't either. Some of my aunts did. I wasn't influenced by them. judi

Thank you for sharing this post with us. I enjoyed reading. Interesting fact, cigarettes have been banned in most places, but....our governments are legalizing marijuana. The carcinogens are strong in marijuana than in cigarettes. I am waiting until the government gets wise to this and smoking marijuana will be just as illegal. The other marijuana products are fine, it's just smoking it.

Thanks so much for your review and comments. I don't know about legalizing marijuana. I can't stand the smell of it, and I would not want to be working around someone who was using. I don't think legalization will be a good thing. judi

many states already have
-
I think legalizing marijuana is a bad step, but it looks like the future. I hope after seeing the consequences of marijuana use, they'll reconsider, judi
-
One would think so. It's mostly legal in the blue states and in some swing states. 13 states have it fully legal.

The thing I found most interesting about this piece was the several different attributions of the term "coffin nails". Apart from cigarettes, I wasn't familiar with any of these. So I have come away better-informed.
Potential SPAG?

Thanks for introducing to me a new idiom. I grew up in China and do remember about the "early grave" warnings. My father-in-law died young at age of 66 due to lung cancer caused by smoking. His sister, however lived to 96 years old after being a life long smoker. Some people has good genes so they will live long no matter what they do to themselves. But we should play safe.
Well done.

Thanks for your review and comments. I'm glad to hear from someone who remembers the Chinese "early grave" warnings. It's strange that some people get away with their smoking. I agree it's best to play safe and not start smoking. judi

Loved all your international and historical research here, Judi! I could never stand the smell of smoke of any kind but especially of cigarettes. I had no idea that there was an Anti-Cigarette League as far back as the early 20th century. I knew some doctors even recommended it as a way of strengthening the lungs decades ago!

It's hard to believe that doctors at one time thought smoking would strengthen the lungs. Thanks for your review and comments. I can't stand the smell of smoke, either. I was always hesitant to speak up and tell people I'd prefer that they didn't smoke, though. judi
