Well this is a great addition to the book, Jan, one I'm sure not many people have heard about. I'm not quite sure how the saying relates to the actual meaning, but it's funny. Thanks for sharing and enlightening us.

I have never heard of this proverb/idiom before as I live in India and we are not familiar with American English that comes from different parts of America. But I enjoyed your post and I found it very amusing. All those cows eating cabbage and the old woman mistaking an elephant for a cow! ha! Ha11 Thanks for sharing!

Ha, well that was a clever twist, but I can see it playing out. The sheriff must've got the biggest charge upon realizing the oversized cow was actually an elephant.

Excellent contribution to this most unique and interesting book. :))

Hello Jan.

I can imagine what the older lady was talking about when she said the cows were pulling up the cabbages with their tails and then stuffing them in their... whatever.

This was rather great, Jan. I really enjoyed the picture of the cow in the cabbage patch. I more so enjoyed the story you wrote about "how the cow ate the cabbage". It was truly delightful although I do agree that it is something that the older generation said. Very well done and greatly enjoyed.

I was laughing from the first line to the last. I knew it had to be great if you were talking about how the cow ate the cabbage! But the 'origin story'... Oh, my! That was delightful.
I've always heard that as something like a come-to-Jesus-meeting. I guess that's appropriate, too. :)
I didn't see any corrections, and please don't change a thing!
Great job!
Blessings,
Deb

An interesting bit of article. It points up that meaning depends on context and that with spoken words some of that context is physical or tonal. And context also means where it is used.

The pace is good. The language is casual and friendly as fits a folk lore recitation. The images are clear and the history of the saying is a nice touch to end the piece.

Thanks for a good read.

What a fascinating proverb, and an extraordinary one, an old short sighted woman who thought an elephant was a a cow, (a pretty large one no doubt) this is a doozie of a story Jan, but an excellent add on to this collection started by Helen, well done, blessings Roy
