This is a delightful story and it sounds like something you would tell us about your family. It seems like something that would make a great family tradition. Great prompt.

This is too good a story to be mostly fiction. It sounds like a lot of fun to pass the spoon around within a family that is growing in generations and size. What could be more harmless than a wooden spoon? And yet, if you are the one who has been pranked, you must feel special, because someone cared enough to tease you. Just delightful!

Hi Susan, Yes, I confess it to be being more fact than fiction, but there are some elements of fiction included. Your words are very true, and it did make one person feel special, and then that one got a bit of fun in the quiet planning for the next one. Such a lovely review, many thanks.

A fun story and a really good contest entry. It is certainly original and still very believable as an ordinary event among a family. I enjoyed the read and wish you luck in the contest. Ann

I believe those are the types of memories that will remain and be passed on throughout the years and generations. It's a cute story. Much better than having one used as punishment over and over.

Hugs, Carol

Thank you very much Carol, your review is appreciated. Yes, you are absolutely right - although I had to add a bit of fiction to make to a fictional story, it is essentially true.

I found a wooden spoon in some giveaways and now wonder if the cats would notice it in their bed...well fiddle - their bed is my bed and I would be tricking myself!! Very cute story and you wrote it well - a delightful divergent!

Hmm, this is well written and light heart family tale. Only, the logical part of me is confused as to how it became a family tale given:

no-one ever knew who the perpetrator of this practical joke was.

Nor did anyone ever let on that they had been the recipient of the spoon.

    The mother knows everything!!
And once it started, two knew, then three, and so it continued. And sometimes there were whispers ... but never any admissions ... ah the mystery of it all.
Thanks for a great review - and for spending time thinking about it. Lol!

I enjoyed reading your short story entitled: "The Wooden Spoon"
It appears to meet the requirement of the contest. Not exceeding the word count.

For me the storyline was original and creative, even though very similar to some of my memories of pranks played, fictional tales, fables and myths told, that have been passed down to children and others by families.

Many stories have survived centuries and become a time of traditional sharing. You're choosing a wooden spoon from the kitchen to involve the whole family, I thought that to be an excellent choice. It took me back to my childhood, memories of "the licking of the cake batter from it and the correctional mild spanking with it". I was able to imagine as I read your intriguing accounts of finding the wooden spoon in the bed upon awakening and not knowing how it got there, that it could be used and adapted even today by those interested in playing pranks at home, at camps or sleepovers. I, as a child, loved to have my imagination sparked and still do now well into senior years. You took my memory back to the many wonderful years of believing as a child in the "Tooth Fairy and Santa." I also liked that you did not leave out the adults when you wrote of the brother finding "The Spoon" in his bed on his wedding night." The playing of safe funny pranks, beliefs in myths and being challenged to figure out puzzling unanswered experiences for the most can be fun, giving one an exciting sense of self-achievement and a rewarding sense of pride, once resolved. As I read I entered into all of the latter mentioned and the excitement of the family tradition as it was developing and the need to figure out when and where the spoon was going to show up, who might be involved in placing it. At least everyone seemed to know where to return it. Well planned and penned! Well done!

Thank you so much for your lovely and comprehensive review. Much appreciated, and I am glad you enjoyed it. Yes - it could be done on camps and sleepovers too. What fun!
The word count is okay (387), as it just needed to be under 550.
    Thanks again,

I love your story. You have given us a lot to think about, and questions to consider. We wonder who started this and why. We wonder how each one has been able to keep quiet about what they are doing, and not give the secret away. Thanks for sharing.

What a fun and slightly bizarre family tradition Wendy. The fact that it has continued on through the generations is pretty cool. A wooden spoon in our family was a threat of been put over a knee and paddled with it : ) Yep that would put the fear of God into the one being threatened with it : ))

I had been known to threaten with it, and I did smack the dining table once ....
