This is a bittersweet tanka. The emotion is felt by a lot of people who mourn the loss of loved ones gone for a long time. The scent can possibly bring back a memory that may bring back the face.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

This is a heartfelt poem. Very nice. The photo complements the writing. You must miss your mother a lot. I am sure she must be very proud of you today. Bravo!

This is such a beautiful, touching SUPERB tanka! It resonates with me because I too have a "box of precious things." If you'd used big, fancy words that sent me to the thesaurus, I would NOT be so moved!!

This just made my heart pitter-pat!! I had an evil mother and nothing like your scarf to hold when times are hard. My Grammy was really more of a mother and I close my eyes whenever I hear bird song...for she raised finches and parakeets - and a parrot. I am so glad you are here - mayhaps I can learn from you!

How wonderful to still have the smell of someone after they've gone. I had a hair brush belonging to my husband and it was a great comfort after he died, it eventually I had to throw it away, I could identify with your words here, love Dolly x

Comment from Gloria ....
This is a fine tanka, and true to the form in the imperial sense. A memory of a loved one, your mother, now passed but still lingers in the silk scarf that holds so much meaning for you.
Very, well done here. :))

You did a great job with your poignant tanka, Gypsy. I like its presentation--the color scheme works well, the image is beautiful, and your words are filled with imagery. Your notes add more info. I quit entering tanka contests on FS because the judges don't know what a tanka is and how it should be written right.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Yes, I know what you mean. I'm thinking about starting a japanese poetry club to cover all the other forms than just haiku. Most Fanstory writers have narrow minds about that kind of poetry. Thank you very much, Jan. I always appreciate your reviews. Have a great weekend.

This is so elegant, heartfelt in its simplicity. I am sorry you lost your mom at such a young age. This brought back memories for me. My mom died two weeks before my eighth birthday, and I remember holding on to the baby clothes and her sweater for days, smelling her essence. I too try to remember what she was like.
Thank you for the read.

Mary

This is so lovingly written that it brought tears to my eyes. I miss my mother who died when she was 93. It's been several years since she passed but, I long for a scarf with her scent to smell, when I feel all alone in the world and need my mom. I am touched by this piece and can palpably feel the grief you must've felt when you were but ten years old. How sad to lose a mother when so young...it is very special to have that box of precious things to peruse and remember the loving scent of your mother. The tanka is well done and fits the mold it is meant to fit inside. Thank you for sharing this beautiful and poignant poem with us.
Take care,
Jesse
