I very much enjoy your return back to the beginnings in the final stanza. You've managed to bring a dreamy melancholy to the work, as centred around the motif of light.

Excellent contribution to the free verse club J, and your free verse poems are always stellar.

You've painted a lovely picture of your birth home and your fond memories. Funny how food is so important to our roots stories. I too have a memory as sweet as this. Thanks for sharing.

LKG Alexander, it is not a wonderful thing that we possess memories that keep us humble.

I enjoyed this free verse poem because I could relate to a lot of the visuals that you created with your words. This stanza made me reflect on my childhood:
"Alas, my reverie comes full circle as the moon's full face
comes into view and lights the evening with longer shadows.
And I know that the old house across the hollow is,
but a relic, that fuels distant memories."

This is so lovely. The imagery is just fantastic. I followed it in my head like a story.

"That lone light was all that remained intact,
in my birth home with those old rotted floors,
sideways leaning walls and broken windowpanes,
adorned with tattered and musty, dusty curtains
flapping even in the stillest of breezes."

Good stuff!!

What a kind gesture of validation for this Free Verse, a biographical dance with a fond memory.

The adjectives were great here in this narrative, and we could really almost taste the cornbread and the beans here as you make this old cottage come to life out of the old warping wood. We see that old lamp light still lighting up the windows, the faces around the kitchen, and the scene comes to life and brings back those warm family feelings from childhood. estory

-Very nice image and
excellent poem to go with it, Jim.
-Effective imagery paints a
vivid word picture of this homestead
when you describe the birth home.
-Very good comparison between the
flickering light and the old movie reel.
-An excellent conclusion that shows
the nostalgia for the place in the
last two lines.
-Well done!

I enjoyed very much this nostalgic look at your childhood and the home you lived in. Clearly these memories were fond ones, and your mother must have been a wonderful parent, thank you.

She played her role very well, hers was not an easy life.

This is a lovely free verse that is touching and poignant. It is very important for us never to forget our roots, as they form the foundation of who we are. Yours is obviously a very strong one - one filled with love and fond memories. (not sure if this is biographical) Keep that light on and visit often...

Yes very much biographical, we never realize the value in simple thongs until the simple things are no longer.
