In fact, the name is PRAYing mantis on account of their hand position. Perhaps you can tweak by having his mom explain the distinction between the homonyms by a segue to what the prayers prey on:
wiki
Mantises are generalist predators of arthropods.[2] The majority of mantises are ambush predators that only feed upon live prey within their reach. They either camouflage themselves and remain stationary, waiting for prey to approach, or stalk their prey with slow, stealthy movements.[34] Larger mantises sometimes eat smaller individuals of their own species,[35] as well as small vertebrates such as lizards, frogs, fish, and particularly small birds.[36][37][38]

Thanks for that review and facts about the Praying Mantis. The site I checked said they were called that because they were looking for prey, but I wondered if that was true, why they weren't called preying mantis.

Very well written story as told by a child. How often we laugh at things our children say, when we should be more careful. It is so easy for them to misunderstand the meaning of words, especially when so many sound the same but mean differently.

Thank you for reading and comments on this.

That sucks that the lesson the child took away was to quit being inquisitive because people laughed at her. Good luck in the contest. Stay safe and stay healthy.

Yep, I didn't like being laughed at. Thanks for the review. It only stopped me temporarily from asking questions.

That is a cute little story, seen in a little eyes of a little girl. Well done. What a perfect picture to complement your story. I enjoyed it from start to finish and I'm sure others will too. Good luck in the contest.

This is an adorable story. I think you've captured a child's thoughts quite well... an insect can look like a skinny green man and a turtle can look like a painted ball. And prey vs pray? There are many adults who don't get that.
Well done.

This story, Don't Laugh at Me, captures a funny moment of learning and we all had them. Seems like Mom liked to rat out the kid's learning moments. How did we survive?
