Nowadays teachers have to come up with some creative ways to hold the students attention. The old school that I attended would put most kids today asleep, I remember nodding off.

Exactly right. You need to find what it is that interests them and start from that point. They then perceive it as both interesting and relevant. Good to hear of your experiences.

Wonderful! This is truly a win for you and the students. I remember in one of my work environments, we had a mail dude, who felt he could never do well in school but if he were in your class, he'd find out he's a sports scoring genius.
