So true Patricia, harsh words do hurt the hearer. Often the speaker forgets those angry words, but the one they were aimed at carries them for much longer. Well said,
cheers,

Your message is an important one--harsh words are improper and hurtful. Some people don't stop to think about what they're saying, especially if they are yelling. Unseen wounds can take a long time to heal, and some times they never do. I hope your commentary poetry opens some eyes that need to start thinking about changing the way they treat others.

Hi Pat, most people can find that fine line, that space in between harshness and complete ambivalence. With some people, it's a difficult place to find because as you say, some folks are quite sensitive. Words must be chosen carefully! :)

Sometimes the verbal abuse can hurt as much as physical abuse. I've read quite a few poems lately that deal with how words can be hurtful and make a person want to withdraw and just give up. Occasionally verbal bullying even leads to suicide. Children, especially, are sensitive to abusive words. You did a great job with your word choices and presentation. judi

I admired your "words" illustration and matching color presentation. I too had a father who spoke harshly to me as a child. Yes, "soft words turn away again". Sighs- Joan

You're so right harsh words can be very hurtful. As much so if not more than physical abuse. Especially when it comes from someone we love. Your poem is very well-written. Your great word choice allows you to convey your message nicely, Great job.
You might want to look at the 6th line from the bottom.

I agree with you! My ex was an abuser (verbal and physical) and now just the slightest raise in a voice can send me walking the other way! It destroys my peace and I even shake inside! I really appreciate you chose to discuss this issue. I think people here can really get to know one another through one's poetry! xoxo

Poet, your words are quite real. We fail often in our society to be kind, patient, unhurried and regrettably, we seldom "walk in the other persons slippers". We are a self focused, me, me mindset and I for one hope that

That's sad. My father was the same way. He'd ask for something and then add "NOT NOW BUT RIGHT NOW! I know you sometimes have to be firm with a child, but not to the point they're scared. I think you're doing the right thing writing about it. It helps.
