Don't quite get the grandma phrase unless you are referring to caring.Perhaps the need to rhyme forced this selection of words a bit. don

Yes, I can see this as an example of greatness in America. The grandma part really sold it. The Canal in Panama, yes we paid for it, but it's not ours anymore. Well done.

You have fulfilled the requirements or the 5/7/5 contest. Correct syllable count. I felt the third line sounds a bit contrived in order to rhyme with the first two lines. As an American Patriot you picked a good subject. Good Luck. Regards Dorothy

02/10/2014 Hello! Thank you for your consideration, appreciation, and participation (Leisure)! The Panama Canal was completed by The United States of America. As a leading United Nation, the great United States has "Heart", so much so that it is compared to the loving "Heart" (Characteristic) of a Grandma. "Heart" is a key characteristic of leadership. Hello. It reads well. I don't quite get all the references, but then I am not American. I though Panama was another country, oh well I learn something evryday.

A nice poem with correct syllable count.
Good word economy too.
I like the comparison you make here.
Good luck! :)

I feel like I am missing something important here. Maybe a reference I don't have would make it all clear.
I do like the use of sounds in this 5-7-5. Maybe someday, you will play with extending it into tanka form and give us more of the story/scene. I'd be surprised if you didn't have more to tell.
Thanks for posting. Peace.
