Hi Jay,

A very entertaining way of delivering the information. I've written a few bits on this type of thing myself, although nowhere near as inventive or entertaining as this is.

All the best
G

Hey, G. Sorry you had to go digging for this. Look for a new title next time. I'll change enough of the content to qualify as a new post. Thanks for reading. Thrilled you enjoyed it.

Hi, Jay,

I read through this chapter, which means, I've officially read and reviewed all the chapters of how this critter crits, and moreso, I'm the one who has benefited from reviewing... moreso than you, especially in cases like this chapter.

You do so very well with taking a very large-picture concept and packaging it into something I can wrap my head around. Tying the opening paragraph into the story, compartmentalizing the breadcrumbs for readers to chase, be it if they are leaving a block's amount of bread crumbs or breadcrumbs across state (novel or short)... and keeping the reader hungry for the next crumb. (Something that if you are reviewing, you should be aware of to be able to analyze if the writer did it effectively, and round about... if you are writing, you should be aware of in order to captivate and hold an audience)

In this chapter, from the eyes of a reviewer, you took an approach not so much exactly how to review these concepts, but how to fathom them. (In a room full of writers who have to review... this macro reviewing chapter shows more on aspects of writing. It's a lovely chapter, packed with information and charisma.

I can see it more from their perspectives.
(I enjoyed the personal reflection tidbits, too. Has that selling feel, keeping the target loose and liking the voice and wanting to paying attention, which in turn, shows a great example of how to keep the reader reading to the end)

I'm glad that I got to read this chapter, it touches on a lot of things that I lack, and a lot of the lacking comes from a self-defeating place.

Turtle, sorry you had to ferret this out; then when you succeeded get paid so precious little for your really sterling words. I'm thinking the next chapter will fall in your queue and allow you to get credit for you time and effort.

Girl, I have huge medical concerns weighing me down. Heart and Lungs and age. Water water everywhere. Having friends like you keep me going. God Bless you.

Jay,

My, oh, my! So much information! I'm not QUITE sure what the sole subject of this chapter was... but the whole was delicious. I especially loved the concluding example. Beautiful and so true to life! *smile*

A couple of 'critter' notes:
1.) Okay, then, whether or not the Cheshire (C)at said it...

2.) white shirts, pedaling wherever these Missionaries pedal in their
--> just wondering why 'missionaries' is capitalized...

Thanks a heap!

You're welcome, Robyn and THANK YOU. Will take care of Cheshire Cat. Sorry you had to search for it. I'm going to make changes in future posts and put 'em up as NEW. FS unnecessary challenges are ridiculous.

Nice work, Jay. I loved your opening! What I can't believe is how you weren't a good salesman. I mean, I have been sold on the premise of this. It's good food for thought. The part that resonated most was the avoiding creating a lull in the novel. I have the same book on my nightstand for the past eighteen years and can't get finish it.

Hope your doing well,
Russell

As always, thank you, Russell. Out of curiosity did show up in your inbox, or did you just happen upon it? Either way, Thanks, friend.

I happened upon it. No notice in my box.

Now, I'm totally baffled. What is the value of a certificate, if it doesn't give one's fans notification?

Hi...didn't read this soon enough for real money...so you just get my two cents worht:-)
I had a good chuckle at points...I am no salesman and can think of no job that would be a worse hell...so for me it was entertaining and good advise...
keep redoing these, I figure them to be well worth it:-)

I'm sorry you didn't get to this soon enough. I'm planning on posting the next chapter tonight. In fact, if you keep an eye out for it, it should post in about 5 minutes, so you'll have a chance for a pump.

It took me a while to get back to reading the critting explanation, but it was worth waiting for and fun. This comparison to the insurance salesman takes a bit to fully appreciate, but certainly adds up as one considers the initial investment of time and eye muscles used in the reading of a book. The comparison with short stories and novels also makes sense. This material, as you well know, what be pretty dry if not for your satirical trimmings throughout. This is what makes learning and agreeing with the nuances of writing saleable to the reader.
I felt sorry for me though (Bill) as he became the victim of an author's hook. Love this stuff.

You had me laughing from start to finish, Jay. You have a heightened sense of humour and wit, my friend. Very refreshing.
I wondered if this was as much about reviewing, as it is about the art of writing. Then again, there's really no difference. I've noted that many FS reviewers have absolutely no business attempting to review, simply because they clearly have no idea what they are talking about. Yet, review they must, alas, if they have any hope of promoting their own work in order to receive those coveted stars...hopefully. It's a viscious circle for some. Yet, a read of something like this series of yours can only be of assistance to any aspiring critter...or author. I thank you for your insights, and I personally have taken away a few suggestions that I must consider carefully. Thank you, Jay.

Anthony

Ant, you are so generous with your comments and your rating. Both are appreciated. I got that comment about it being a primer on writing the first time it was posted in 2009 (or was it 2006?) And you're right ... you can't really separate the two, can you?

Hi, Jay...

Style is an important aspect of who a writer is. I believe it is very important to find and stick to it. When you start allowing the influence of others to take you from who you are then you're not sure who you are as a writer.

I always like to consider ideas and suggestions, but bottom line is the writer should remain true to their craft.

I won't read a half-dozen chapters and still not figure out what the story is about. They better hook me from the get-go or I'm outta there.

Good chapter.

Cheers & Blessings

You thought it through, edited it well, and ended up with a very informative essay, and even in the perversely show-off works, like Last Exit To Brooklyn, the patterns are there. You realize that a one-sitting read for some of us, like me, is ten thousand words shorter than for eddicated fokes?
