What a wonderful story. It has an upbeat tone to it. It flows nicely from beginning to end. I bet Wesley got the surprise of his life.
Well done and good luck in the contest.

Good artwork and story to go with it. A good opening that introduces Wesley and his 80th birthday being celebrated with friends at the Senior Center who planned the event. They made sure he noticed the cake, and then, Surprise! I imagine it was a big surprise for Wesley. He must have known Melinda, too. Now he knows her even better. A very good entry; good luck in the contest.

Now, that is a surprise and a half. I hope his heart was in good shape, as well as his blood pressure and sense of humour. This one is fun, and a properly shaped story.

That's freaking hilarious. Hopefully when I am 80 someone does that for my birthday.
Just two things on formatting. 1) your image is not actually transparent. To avoid this, make sure to save the actual transparent image, without the background on an image editor. 2) if you want your text to start below the image rather than to the right of it, which can be distracting, at the bottom of your editor, click the advanced options and set your image size to small.
Thanks for the read and good luck in the contest,

Thank you so much, Simian. I am delighted you were amused. And I appreciate the advice about my image.

Well, I guess it was a surprise for him. Maybe, if he saw a huge paper cake and only four out of five women. It's a nice story, and how I hope my senior years go. Don't tell the wife.

There's no doubt that you fulfilled the theme of "Surprise" here. He certainly wasn't expecting that. And the great thing about your short story is that it leaves the reader wanting more. Nicely done in such succinct format. Good luck! Debbie

Excellent, now I am left wondering if poor old Wesley survived such a surprise, very well done, as one would definitely not be expecting that at their age, best wishes for your contest****kahpot
