Exceptional

I am not familiar with CHOKA poems, so thank you for the explanation and what seems to be a good model for the format. I certainly see the self-expression and artistic exploration here. (Could you write any other way?) As to the cultural exploration, it seems to fit my culture more than yours or the Japanese. I can't tell you how many times I have swallowed watermelon seeds. I know that there are seedless varieties now, but my husband insists on watermelon the way that it used to be. Hence, I still swallow the seeds along with the red richness of the fruit.
You are so good at wordplay (just play in general) and any poetic device. The CHOKA suits you and this one is very enjoyable.

You know what I learned from Wendy G: that watermelons grow there in Australia YEAR ROUND!! I told I'm moving there! Want to come, too, because it sounds like you like this fruit as much as I do. (It's actually my favorite fruit of all.) How do you cut yours, Debbie? I see so many different ways, I'm almost thinking it might be like a Rorschach test!

Interesting thing about watermelon--my dad put pepper on it. He did not use pepper on anything else.
I just had it in a salad with feta and balsamic. Now I am looking for the recipe.
We have always cut it in eighths. That means you have to eat a lot in one sitting, which we do. My daughter cuts the entire thing in bite size pieces and the kids get a portion with every meal.
It's a special fruit for sure. Since I hate, hate, hate to drink water, I eat watermelon to hydrate. Love the stuff.

It's downright embarrassing how much watermelon I can eat at one sitting.

Oh, and PEPPER! I actually bet that's good. I have a watermelon on the counter that needs one more day before I can cut it (it produces a pitch my ear recognizes as "ready" before I cut into one), so after I have that done, I'm going to try some pepper on it! I've always used salt, but I'm eager to try something else. Thank for the tip! xoxo

The "white" part of your green melon should be yellow. That's the mark of readiness.

I agree; it's actually my favorite fruit - no close seconds. And Wendy G, who's from Australia, told me that they grow it there YEAR ROUND!! (I told her I'm moving there.)

Thanks for the nice review, Lori. I always love hearing from you. xoxo

Nicely done, Rachelle. You certainly followed the syllable count, and I like that you took it a step farther with your extensive use of alliteration. You make it very easy to visualize the person eating the watermelon and swallowing the seeds. The only thing you missed was the juice on the jaw. (See, I can alliterate too!)

Oh would I ever like to have a fresh watermelon right now. I refuse to pay $9.00 for one though, so I'll just do without. This is a wonderful poem capturing the delights of a summer day. Thanks for sharing this.
Blessings,
Tom

WOW!! NINE BUCKS where you are????? That is way too much, and you're right: it would not be a pleasure eating one so expensive. That's just nonsense.

Wendy G told me that in Australia, where she is, it's a year-round fruit!! (I told her I was moving there, in that case!) xoxo

I'm in Wasilla, Alaska. The cost of freight makes everything higher, and as you know, watermelon, being full of water, at eight pounds per gallon, is a heavy fruit. I do love it though. I splurged awhile back when one of the stores had it for $5.99 each and I bought two.
reply by the author on 20-Aug-2024
$5.99 is what we pay here, and we find it hefty. But I'd forgotten that you're in Alaska, so it makes sense with the freight charge and how heavy watermelons are. Still, though...Sheesh!.

This melon certainly had an impact here and I enjoyed the action here. A vivid lively poem full of thirst quenching satisfaction and reverberating melon seeds curdling in the stomach, I loved this action packed poem Rachelle, love Dolly x x x

I love strawberries, but if I eat to many (as I'm wont to do), I grow hives!!!

Excellent entry for the japanese poetry club choka event. I appreciate your participation. Beautiful presentation and imagery. I remember eating watermelon when I was little. My parents told me that if I ate the seeds a watermelon would grow in my belly! Crazy but it was a different time and parenthood.

Well done, Rachelle

EVERYBODY'S parents told them that!! And we all believed them, too. I wonder if today's little ones would. I think of them as being so much savvier than us! Thanks for the affirming review, Gypsy. xoxo

Thank you for sharing this club entry with us. Watermelon is one of my favorite parts of summer. Your poem was fun to read. The artwork you chose fits this poem perfectly.

Thanks, Barbara. Watermelon is my favorite summertime fruit, too. Wendy G. told me that there in Australia, they get to have it year-round!!! I told her I'm moving there! Maybe you should join me. We'll take a road trip...

The artwork for this was from Gypsy, who is the facilitator of the Japanese Poetry Club. She presents us with a picture and assignment each week, and in true Gypsy form, the pics are always mesmerizing.

Thank you very much for your nice review. xoxo

Here in Texas we can get it year-round too because of being so close to Mexico, but I still prefer it in the summer.
reply by the author on 20-Aug-2024
Oh, wow!! You're living my dream, then, Barbara! Because I'm telling you: if there were watermelon available year round, I would be eating it year round!! I'd trade our stupid year-round apples for year-round watermelons ANY DAY!!!
reply by barbara.wilkey on 20-Aug-2024
    LOL True.
