This story, Daddy, creates a hole where the narrator can tell the readers this confined tale of men at war. The overall story seems to broaden, at the end, to our failures with our Heavenly Father.

I'm sure there are many who have memories of battles that never quite leave them, and the questions of why. You brought the stories of the fathers in well, Sarge, what fatherhood meant to him, how his children would not get to know their Dad, and then the twist, and the question we are left with. What did he do, why the guilt over his own father. A very poignant story, Jim.

War is terrible. War is horrific. Nobody wants to be the last survivor of their unit. Well, maybe somebody real self-centered would want that.
Hopefully, the Sarge's life example will be enough to get you on the right track

Your post clearly shows someone in turmoil with themself based on prior relationship struggles. The fact that the character saw all the good in another person who was a Dad and whom he looked up to, finally made him realize his prior actions and regret them. Good story.
