This story has great potential, but I have questions.
(he locked eyes with "our" under cover police chief) Does the word "our" mean the person telling the story is a police officer?
(But years ago, I gave him a visit.) I gather the entire story took place years ago.
In the end, was it a detective who shot everyone in the place? If so, why? Did the detective then shoot himself in the head and guess he had been wrong? Huh? Wrong about what? Sorry. I just didn't get it.

I can feel the emotions behind this 100%. It's a good story from start to finish. Draws The Listener in and keeps them engaged all the way through. This is a good entry.
