Hi Wendy,
You know, I'd be lost without my left hand, but there's not a whole lot I can do with it except use my fingers to play chords on my guitar. I'm right-handed, and not a bad guitarist. I play in the Worship Team at my church. But if I switched... playing chords with the fingers of my right hand, and strumming (for example) with my left hand, I'd fail completely! Still, my left hand is important. I mean, where would we be without our little toes. We take those wee critters for granted. But without them, we'd have no balance at all! We'd be falling over all the time!
I enjoyed your essay on being left-handed, especially the part about your granddaughter drawing upside-down! Isn't that crazy? But could we do it, if we had to? I don't think so. Miss Six is just wired differently from us right-handers. And perhaps that's evidence of a gifted gal.
When you were explaining "duke", I thought about John Wayne, the Duke. But when I looked it up, I discovered he got his nickname because it was the name of his Airedale Terrier. A local fireman started calling John "Little Duke", and it stuck. He actually liked it much better than "Marion". Before he became a western star, his real name was Marion Robert Morrison!
Hugs,
Kimbob

You are so right. Even the insignificant parts of our bodies all have a purpose. God?s designs are perfect. Thank you so much for reviewing. Very much appreciated. Good to see you around.

This is interesting. Being left handed isn't unusual but writing the way you describe your granddaughter writing sound unusual. I had a daughter in law who was lefthanded and my grandson is. For a while one of daughters seemed to attracted to only left handed guy. She dated four of them before marrying a right handed guys,

Exactly, why not just accept the difference and stop trying to force people to change. Totally unnecessary. Thank you for your thoughtful review.

I know there seems to be a much higher level of participants at sport than the actual lefty percentage of the population, than their right handed counterparts, as a guitarist they have their strings the wrong way, well done, blessings Roy

I think when they play guitar left-handed they have their strings adjusted to suit, and then for them it is the "right" way. Thank you for reviewing and for your thoughtful comments.

I think you're right about the creativity thing. My ex-boyfriend James was left-handed, and he was a great guitarist. I enjoyed reading about your granddaughter's special skills. Thank you for sharing, and best wishes to you.

This was a fun read. My papa was left-handed and grew up in the time when teachers punished kids for that. My dad is partially ambidextrous. I remember thinking it wasn't that much different until I tried to use the special left-handed scissors. That didn't work very well at all! I like the way you set up false expectations - you wrote almost as if there was a disability, and then it was something else. Left-handedness has been seen as a problem in other times and places though, which you brought up, and which strongly made your point about the learning differences.

I am so pleased you enjoyed this story. Yes, those days were awful when children were hit with the edge of a ruler and forced to change. I find doing things left-handed awkward - even little things. Thanks so much for a great review.

My husband is left handed but only because polio in his right arm forced it upon him. Everything he does seems backwards to me but the same holds true to him about my way of doing things. My mother was fanatical about forcing her grandchildren to be right handed and I was ready to fight her on it if my daughter appeared to have a left handed tendency. We are what we are and in my opinion there is no "correct" way to do things.

Exactly!! Why should they be forced to do things in ways which to them are quite back to front? I'm glad you were prepared to be strong about it. My husband had polio in his left leg and walks with a limp. Thanks so much for a super review.

As a left-hander, I understand this story completely. My mom always told me that she couldn't teach me to do things because I was left-handed but what she really did not know was that I had a very creative mind and could follow instructions if they had been given to me in the proper order. That is something that I learned to do. I never got a lesson in how to sew or crochet or net. I learned it all from books and left-handed. People are very talented and they need to be encouraged in that talent. Patricia

What a fascinating story about left-handedness, Wendy. I learned a lot from reading it. One thing I learned was that Miss 6 is quite brilliant and has developed her own unique way of looking at and doing things. It's such a shame that in the past, lefties were discouraged from being lefties. What an intolerant attitude, which I'm sure destroyed a lot of creativity these kids may have had.

Thanks for teaching me so much about left-handedness.

Thank you, Jim. I am so pleased you enjoyed it. Yes, one wonders about the lost creativity, and I do shake my head about the intolerance of lefthandedness in former days.

I must admit I've never heard the term Mollydooker before even though my sister and my eldest granddaughter is a leftie. I never realised how awkward it must have been for Beverlee (sister) until I saw how my granddaughter struggled with some tasks. I also have a friend who should be lefthanded but, at school, if she picked up her pen in her left hand she would get a ruler slapped across the knuckles.
Very interesting read, Wendy.
cheers,
valda
