I see that the author is speaking philosophically and perhaps even prophetically through Art here. I have to agree about the need for fast-paced, attention-grabbing entertainment for the young people of today and that golf could be less appealing. But they said that about baseball and I don't see that slowing down. There will always be devoted fans.

I think one thing that helped baseball was that pitching clock. I know I much prefer watching a game now that they instituted that. Sometimes you just have to make allowances for an impatient audience.

And then there's just listening to the game with our digital media. That's how my son-in-law enjoys his "season" ticket. 😊

You've woven a really great story around this general saga of Golf's evolution to now, and the marvellous people that helped shape it destiny and course. I hope you are right about that, Roy. It's a sport that's captivated me for over 60 years now. Perhaps the evolution you mentioned will be seen in Part 4.

This is really good. Art Calvin thinks the game is dying because of the lack of water for the grass and it looks as if he is right. Art has never heard of Abby's golf suit, so it must not have gone into production. There is obviously a reason they travelled to the places they went to in the past. I'm looking forward to part 4.

Thanks, Carol. I'm hoping to bring it all together in Part 4 where we'll see why they traveled to where they did and what the future may hold for the game.

Yeah, it kind of is how I feel. For sure, Covid gave golf a real boost, but you hate to think of the cost that involved. Florida has plenty of rainfall and a more permissive attitude about golf than states like California. But my real fear is the attitudes of the younger generation and their insistence on fast-paced, short-term entertainment and instant success. Golf, as it is now, is not conducive to that. Maybe there's a solution to that in Part 4.
Hey, I'm really happy for your husband. I played my best golf when I was older too.

Meanwhile, you've done a marvelous job capturing the soul-ular connection with golf, from the environmental aspect. Your love of the sport came through loud and clear.

What a wonderfully written chapter here, Jim, and I feel quite sad that, having traveled along these journeys with you and been immersed in the obviously very satisfying sport of golf throughout, the outlook for the game in terms of maintenance of golf courses and current popular interest, is now in such jeopardy. I shall look forward to Part 4 now with enormous interest especially as we still have to learn more about the longer term success of the suit perhaps? I don't know if you ever read my "Love Letter to Golf" that I posted earlier this year, in which I said farewell to the game I can no longer play. I understand their problem. We've been in a drought for two plus years and on water restrictions. Our golf course isn't allowed to be watered, or anything else to be honest. Thank you for sharing. I am enjoying reading this.

Thank you so much for all of your kind words, Lea. Yeah, this is primarily a golf story intended for a golfing audience, but most of those reading it here are not golfers, which I find gratifying that they can still enjoy it.
It is both my love of golf and my imagination on how it may have come about that created this novel. I tried to think how I would have done it way back in the 13th century and then beyond. It was fun to speculate. The funnest part, though, is what we will now see as Part 4 unfolds, which will be the solution to preserving the game for the future. There I really had to get creative.

I kept asking 'Is this real?' as in, is this in fact the case in 2023 - is golf declining so much? Because that's not at all the impression I get from my tv - we never miss any kind of golf from the USA or anywhere else, and I thought the game was gaining in popularity.
Art seems very sure that Kevin's generation will be the last to play it - very pessimistic - but is that owing to the restrictions of the prevailing future politics? Reality and fiction are becoming blurred!
Certainly we end on a downward vector - can things improve? Will there be a new hope? We are waiting, Mr. Wile.

Because that's not at all the impression I get from my tv - we never miss any kind of golf from the USA or anywhere else, and I thought the game was gaining in popularity.

I think Covid gave it a big boost, but I'm not sure how much longer that will continue. I hope it does. During the drought years in California, which weren't that long ago, many water restrictions were put in place, and I'm told by a golf course architect friend of mine that the kind of measures I stated were attempted, but lobbyists for the golf industry were able to convince the state legislature to quash the bills that were up for vote. Too many of the legislators were golfers themselves, but that might not always be the case.
The environmentalists have made it very tough to build new golf courses, and have caused the prices of building them to rise considerably and have increased the cost of playing too. The way the economy is going now, I'm not sure the Covid boom will continue. I'm not usually a pessimist, but I am more so when things are out of my control.

Not building new courses doesn't necessarily mean the game's in decline, does it, Jim?

It does if older courses are folding faster than new ones coming up. I've seen a number of courses I used to play give up the goat in recent years (before Covid). I don't know what it's been in terms of new courses lately, but there were a few years not long ago when almost no new courses were being built. I have a friend who is a golf course architect, and his business dried up quite a lot except for renovations which kept him afloat.
