Wow what a cool story sharing your memories withus I thank you for that! High school can be a very scary place especially for a young Girl I too was a late bloomer they used to call me toothpick.
You're written this beautifully, and you're obviously a very talented writer. It shines through with almost every word.
I especially like that you are able to come out of it fairly unscathed and with some accolades under your belt! I see no issues with grammar sentence structure spelling or subject matter. You've done a fine job putting this together the story was clear and Left no doubt to what you were saying. Best of luck and I hope you have a great evening!

No matter who we are, we will come up against a bully at sometime in our life. I have met many bullies in the workplace and some in my personal life. Women are often bullied because men think they should be in charge of women. Handling bullies is a work of art and no one should succumb to them. I am glad you overcame your fear and found people to support you Beth. In the end we always have to stick up for ourselves, make compromises and navigate a fearful world sometimes, I enjoyed your Poignant post, love Dolly x

Thanks for the review and the comments. It has been a long time since I felt fear. I've not met a bully in quite a while. Actually, I think most of them have fears as well. They maintain a tough exterior to cover their on anxiety.

Hello, Beth!
I so enjoyed reading your well-crafted high school memory offering!
I could relate to so many of the scenarios you depicted.
And I laughed aloud when you described "accidentally" dropping your artwork on the library floor so the librarian could see it! Very clever.
I taught high school English and sociology for nearly twenty years; I know the fear of which you speak. My students were the "walking wounded" = those students for whom every day was a challenge of courage and perseverance...

Thank you for sharing!
Much enjoyed!

Thank you Diane. I'm so glad you liked me story. A lot of people have said they can relate. So young people seem confident and self-assured but maybe it is partly a mask we wear to cover our insecurities.

Whenever I see a writer back a post I think it must somehow be special to them. A special moment recalled a chance to reflect and share something about themselves or of life itself. You have written here something, I believe, everyone can identify with. Loren

Everything I write is in someway special to me. It may not be to anyone else, but It's my baby, and I want it to do well. When you put something in a blind contest not many see it and wanted to at least be recognized. Thank you making that happen. I appreciate your comments.

Congratulations on your second place finish!! I knew about you winning the art contest in high school but this one gives us a lot more information including how much you had to overcome to get to know the librarian. And boy, did she put you in a stressful situation. But like you concluded, it was a good preparation for life!

Thank you for the review. I hoped to get enough to at least have it recognized. Many of my stories have things in them I've written about before but writing them again from member usually includes a few more details. You have a good memory of what I wrote earlier. I appreciate you pointing out things that needed work.

I think any incoming freshman would benefit from reading this story. The narrator clarifies her fears of entering high school. I really like the scene where you get Ms. Edwards to see your artwork "accidentally," and you wind up making posters. High school can be very frightening, but do not give in to your fears. This message is very well conveyed. Rod

I enjoyed your story and the perspective it was written in. The change from Gramer School to High School does create much anxiety, as you've shown bringing out the insecurities that change creates. Nice job with this one.

Thank you so much for a great review. I really appreciate your comments. How long have you been on FanStory. I remember someone with your name I thought was my fan back years ago when I was on FanStory the first time. I was here for 2009 to 2013.

It was probably me, I've been here since 2009.

An interesting set of high school memories. A few similarities with Australian high schools but quite a few differences. It seemed harsh for her to insist you did a chalk talk, but as you say, such experiences of overcoming fear are good preparation for life.

Thank you Wendy. I thought insisting that I do that was a bit over the top. She let me know she believed in my ability, but she let me down by not providing a proper easel. I also should have had a chance to rehearse on stage.
reply by Wendy G on 03-Oct-2023
Yes, you are right on both counts. She should have offered practical support instead of just throwing you in at the deep end

You certainly explained the highs and lows of high school. How lucky you were with the librarian. I got good librarians in elementary school and intermediate school, And it seems most librarians are stern until you get to know them. I sure thought they were dragons at the gate until they took an interest in me because of how fast I read and what I read. They lead
me to new writers , and found me more books on whatever I was reading at the time. How lucky we were. Karen
