That's really cool that Ben knew most of the knots from his work on the farm, the railroad, and the mining. Who knew that there would be similarities across such different occupation. Glad that Ben was able to protect Jimmy!

Thank you for your very kind review.

That was a shock finding Ben on a boat. I thought at first it was a dream or a vision. I'm not sure what the the chapter you ommited was about and if it was something you plan to add later.

It was almost all preaching as Ben searched the scriptures about people dying who never heard the Gospel.
Then he got on a replacement train that took him to San Francisco.
Thank you for your review. And bless you for the six stars!

This is a good chapter where Ben adapts to a whole new way of life, and he may be doing what he most doesn't want to do--helping smuggle opium. At least he now knows why he ended up on a ship. God has a plan for him.

Thank you. I appreciate your very nice review.

You've introduced a strong example of foreshadowing. The reader will wonder why this is the common belief: "Everybody on deck knew that boy wouldn't survive the day." I love the knot lessons. It reminds me of Girl Scouts. Well researched and written.

I very much liked the slight change in tone in this chapter, as well as the totally new direction that you have moved in. It has opened up many avenues for the future. kay

Thank you. (Who doesn't like a pirate story?) smiley face here
Yes, I'd say that being shanghaied would change anyone's tone. ha-ha.
Thank you very much for the six stars!

Wayne, I am humbled by your encyclopedic knowledge of so many subjects. Now you've added knot-tying and basic ship knowledge. This all enhances your verisimilitude as a writer. I feel I missed a chapter that finished his railroad explosion experience and led to his conscription on this strange ship. So well done, Wayne!

You did miss that chapter - I skipped over it thinking that it was too much preaching and almost no plot movement. Ben explored Jesus' journey into the belly of the earth while in the tomb. Ben was distraught over the engineer's death (a good, but unsaved man), as well as unreached people who by all accounts were going to hell (not having entered by the 'door').
Anyway, Ben made it to SF on the train that was pulled off the mtn by a replacement locomotive.
Oh - Boy Scouts! 'versimilitude, indeed. My wife pops my big head daily (because I need it popped)
Thank you.

Wives do that. Husbands rarely admit it's needed.

Good chapter, Wayne. Here we see Ben as a captive slave on a cargo ship where he's already making both friends and enemies, which is par for the course for him. The captain doesn't have a chance; he just doesn't know it yet. I think he will become shark food before the end of this part of the story. Well written and interesting, especially learning about the different knots. - Jim

Very entertaining story you got going on here,
Wow you never in those days where you'd end up the best day if you even got close to the warf.Food aboard ship isn't all that great and lots of empty stomach some days.glad Ben could save Jimmy from a sure death.sorry the captain took his hate on Ben with the whip.

Not sure what a 'bean' is, in this context? Congratulations on this amazing milestone. And here is more expertise, in a different field! Sailing. Knots. Amazing, and such fun to read. Nice use of dialect too.

Thank you. It's tempting to go overboard in dialect.
Bean is you head.

Nice dialogue, matey!
Okay, so I'm new to this series and am still learning how it's written, like Ben is learning his new role on the boat. I'm not sure how we got from a train to a ship so quickly - I've got a little whiplash. Do I remember you saying that Ben is transported to wherever he is needed? Is that what has happened?
I just read your author's notes. So something was omitted; intentionally? I am confused:-)
By the way, congrats on #300!

I skipped a chapter that was mostly Bible study.
Ben isn't transported. He's perfectly human. As soon as Ben got to SF he was knocked on the head and shanghaied. I guess I need to beef up that paragraph.
Thank you for reviewing, despite the confusion.
