Another lovely chapter in which Lars and Ruben, despite their initially rather patronising approach to Arie, end up being really impressed by her newly acquired golfing skills. She's certainly endeared herself to Rube and calls both men by their full names as a mark of respect. I love the expression - "ya big galoot" even if it is derogatory:) and don't quite understand the line "Have at it" - should this read "Heave..."? Great work! Thanks, Jim! Debbie

Yup, she definitely is a charmer.
"Have at it" is an American expression which means "Go for it," or simply, "Go ahead." I don't know what the Dutch expression is. I only use a few Dutch words in the story, otherwise readers would always have to be checking the glossary for their meanings. That can be an annoyance. So I tend to have them talk somewhat the way we all talk now, but without too many of our idioms or slang.

Oh I see, sorry.

One wonders how the hitting object evolves, and one realises that if the are natural objects there are limitations, one can see how animal hides came into being, cricket balls, baseballs and golf balls etc. Poor Ruben Arie may be an unreachable. crush. Beautifully written Jim, blessings Roy

There will be some more of this equipment derivation later when we get to Scotland (oops, I gave something away there! Forget I said that.)
Yes, I'm afraid Rube's love for Arie will remain unrequited, at least in a romantic way.

Good story continues to evolve and now a bit of young love is taking shape. Hope they both keep it down the straight and narrow and avoid the sides of romance that can put a curve on any approach!

I'll try to keep them on the fairways and greens, Kevin!

Arie is quite full of herself, isn't she? And already teaching the boys how it's done:-) Woman power at any point in time is fine by me!
Another delightful read, Jim. I don't know what else to call this - delightful just seems to fit the bill.

Oh, she took his hand! That Arie is such a free spirit and not only a quick learner but became a teacher, too. I guess the best way to learn a subject is to teach it. So she's improving all the time. Another fun post and so soon after the other. You're on a roll!

Yes, she's a very quick study and super-coordinated too. Sort of a natural at the new game. Thanks so much, Helen.

Thank you for sharing this addition with us. I enjoyed reading. I always try, as I read, to figure out what's going to happen next. This post has me completely fooled. LOL I couldn't find any way to improve it.

I'm not sure myself what's going to happen next. I have a vague idea, but it's still working itself out.
Barbara, are you a pantser or plotter when you write a novel? (Pantser means write by the seat of your pants. Plotter means have the whole plot worked out ahead of time.)
-
I have a notebook with the entire novel written out before I begin writing, BUT as I write the story my characters take over and take it ways I had no clue about, so I guess I'm both. Is that possible?
-
Yes, it's possible to be both to varying degrees, and you don't have to do each novel the same way either. The first few that I wrote were completely pantser with no idea how they would go until I was about half finished with them, but this current one has a broad, general outline, with few details and no idea what will comprise the individual chapters, so it's a mixture of both too.
It will have 4 parts, and I know in fairly general terms what happens in each part, but it's sort of writing itself as I get to know the characters better.
Having worked in the IT field, I had to be very structured in my program and system development, so it kind of surprised me that in writing fiction I really prefer the pantser approach.
-
My timelines all fall apart. LOL When I attempt to write it my way, my muse wakes me about 2-3 in the morning, not allowing be back to sleep until I follow their plan.
-
Interesting. That happens to me too occasionally. Sometimes scribbling the idea down will allow me to go back to sleep, but sometimes not.

Arie is really a charmer. It's a good thing Kilian laid claim to her because she was very charming to Ruben. Their new big problem seems to be finding a new ball as walnut skins are about to start rotting off the nuts. You are very good at proofreading.

Thanks, Carol. I always put my chapters through a grammar-checker website that I use. It finds a lot of stuff for me--especially misplaced commas.

Thank you, John. Just curious whether or not you are a golfer?
-
Sorry. No. Just like it on tv at times. Who said a decent country walk interrupted by a bit of golf?
-
Some say it was Oscar Wilde who first said "Golf is a good walk spoiled." Others claim it was Mark Twain. But the first time an approximation of this was said was by H.S. Scrivener, who writes in a book about lawn tennis, that he heard some of his friends snicker, ?to play golf is to spoil an otherwise enjoyable walk.?
-
Excellent. Learning new things daily. Thank you.

You know, for a person with no interest in golf except the miniature variety, (that is me), I am liking this story more and more. The connection between Arie and Ruben really worked for me. And all your characters are easy to imagine.

Thank you so much, Loretta. I'm so glad.
It's funny the way that works. I read a book called "Sooley" by David Baldacci that was all about a basketball player, and I'm not a big basketball fan, but I really loved that one.

I smell rotting cheese commencing here. Are you turning a sporting event into a romantic interlude? That may be keen for Killiam but what are you going to do for the other boys?

Ah, don't worry about them. It will end happily for everyone.
-
Maybe in your story but I have a hard time shooting 59 and I am mad as hell and won't take it any more.
-
Here's a tip for shooting 59: quit after 12 holes.
