I remember the possum story, too. Your poor mother-in-law! But really, she grew up in the country so I wouldn't think she would be too afraid of little critters. So glad they didn't bring any diseases to the house!

Thank you Helen. Most country people dislike possums. A lot have free range chicken and the possum eat chickens and their eggs. That is way most farmer keep shotguns.

It's always nice to finish up my day with a good laugh or two, and there is no one better to write something to make me laugh than you. LOL. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for sharing this, Beth. I would not have been as lenient as you about keeping those possums. And I don't blame your mother-in-law for being upset thinking that a rat was in her bed.

Thank you Anne. I appreciate the review. They really aren't kin to rats but they do kind of favor them. Some are saying they got a bad rap because they eat the ticks. Still, they don't belong in a house.

Love the picture that goes with this. Like Don, I had a vulnerability which made me a target for bullies. Like Evan's mom, I would scream 'rat' if I found a possum in my bed!

An interesting series about your time in New Orleans, and all the adjustments you made. Very humorous situation with your mother-in- law!

Thank you Wendy, I'm so glad you find my little stories interesting. I also happy when you point out things you see that need adjusting so I can't fix them.

Oh wow, I guess when we go back we can think of those bad gift moments that stay with us. My thought clicked to the movie, "Christmas Story," When Ralphie had to wear that bunny suit. I appreciate the way you tell the story and how it connects with everyday people and struggles, bringing to bear childhood memories of my own.

Thanks for this review. I sorry it was promoted. FanStory wouldn't let me promote it last night because I had too much stuff our there. I think they let it go on because one of my stories expired.

We've owned lots of four legged ones, cats and dogs, mostly cats, but they were all needy of homes and willing adopters, and it was fun, cats and dogs of course, and a couple of two legged ones, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy

Lol, Beth, I should have waited one more chapter to ask the ages of your children. This one had me laughing. I loved the line, ' Apparently, he found the suckers who were willing to take them.' I'm not sure why opossums get such a bad rap. They're not even part of the rodent family, and they eat ticks. That story was hilarious.

My youngest son doesn't do well in new situations either. Nor does he communicate well. One time his principal called to say he had hit someone at lunch, only to find out our son had been having issues at lunchtime. No one told us. Not even his teacher. My husband, who is a teacher in the same district, was furious.

I look forward to reading more about your adventures.

Thank you Faith. It sound as though our sons were somewhat alike. He's adult now but he will do anything to avoid a confrontation. I'm so glad you like my story. I'm a bit behind on reviewing and answering reviews. I've been out of town a couple of days.

I found this story to be funny and absolutely delightful. I felt sorry for Carol; she was humiliated by the personal gift, as you were.
Your mother-in-law's bed companion was truly priceless.
The one thing I would change is: She was speaking fast "as Spanish people are prone to do when excited" to An excited Spanish lady."
Thank you for the laugh.
Best wishes,
Mary

Those Possums sound like a lot of fun here Beth as they kept escaping! It is a pity your son was so frightened by that Spanish boy and I expect he settled in eventually. School can be a bit frightening when it is all new, I loved hearing about your experiences Beth, you also made me smile with your last paragraph, love Dolly x

Thank you for a great review. I'll have some more to say about what happened with my son and the boy how was bullying him. It wasn't a Spanish boy. This boy he had trouble with was a kid whose family had lived in New Orleans for a log time. The last name indicated he was of Italian decent. I'm glad you enjoying my story.
