IDIOTS like those neighbors should NEVER have any animals and should be treated as they did those dogs, or much WORSE!
Something to consider. If they were deserted like that how horrible are they treated if those a-holes ever return home? Removing them from those premises would probably be a better life for them.
Have always said dogs make much better people than most of the two-legged species could ever hope to.

Thank you Brett. You are absolutely right in your assessment of the owners. I've been in tears this morning as the time has come to make an official complaint. The dogs may well be taken but at least they will have food and water. But they will be kept in kennels at the animal shelter, which to me may be even worse for these poor, bored, lonely, and neglected dogs. It is at least nine days, perhaps eleven or twelve, and they are still away. I am still feeding the dogs, but now they are much more placid, no snarling or growling, and they wait patiently while I lower their food, no attempt at attack. It's so hard to kno wwhat to do for the dogs' best well-being.

If it has been that long possible the IDIOTS are not returning? Unfortunately, would not be the first time something like that occurred.

Great writing. Descriptive, easy to read and to 'hear' as you describe the neglected dogs' barking. So sorry for the animals and so grateful you are their next door neighbor. I hope something even more positive than the dogs care during the neighbor's absence comes from this experience. thanks for sharing. ann

Thank you Ann. I greatly appreciate your review.
They've now been away at least nine days and maybe up to eleven or twelve before I noticed. I am still feeding them, but the time has come to lodge an official report of neglect. I fear that the dogs will be removed and kept in kennels (but at least will have food and water), at least temporarily.

Hmm. First of all, forgive yourself. What is your "crime?" "Not doing your super good person thing, SOONER?" That is not a crime; you are human. Your mind could not go to such a bleak place, immediately.
Your writing is sequential and descriptive. As a reader I feel as if I know all there was to know about this situation, due to your effective writing. I am even left knowing some different character traits of two dogs that are complete strangers to me. I don't even know where they are yet, your words have me rooting for them, I'm reading to watch their reality school, start a fundraiser, or go all out, weekend tv marathon, for them. If you can make a reader invest in two characters, so effortlessly than, you have written this experience very well. I only wish I had a 6 to give. What is with that? I'm glad I read this and I hope all will turn out well. You're a good human. :))

Thank you Alexandra for such a lovely and encouraging review. The owners are still away, so I'm continuing to look after them with food, water and some kind words. Tonight I noticed that Ada's collar is an anti- barking collar. That is why Bear does all the barking. Ada just whimpers. Next thing poor Bear will be wearing one too.

Poor Ada. The owners sound terrible and abusive. That must be a difficult situation for you. The dogs are lucky to have a neighbor who cares!

The people who do not take care of their pets are some of the worst people that I know because if they're not taking care of their pets, how are they treating people are they people they have in their homes being mistreated as well as the dogs I enjoyed listening to your story. It was very distressing to me how somebody could live animals like that along. Patricia.

Thank you Patricia. They are still away. But the dogs seem to accept me, and stand patiently while I lower their food down to them. No growling at me now. But they still bark a lot at night. The owners do get pretty angry with their kids sometimes too, but it's better than a couple of years ago. All our other neighbours are wonderful, and very considerate. Thanks so much for your review. Appreciated.

I applaud you, Wendy for your actions. Both in taking care of the dogs and for not calling the authorities to the scene as they probably would have been taken away and left in cages.
Your neighbor is a different story. He should be reported for stupidity and negligence (I think he deserves a whack with a 2x4 piece of lumber) to the proper authorities. Here where I live, he would go before a judge and be heavily fined and to community service!
Thank you fir the post...

Thank you John. I am continuing to feed them and they don't growl at me or bark now, just stand and wait patiently while I raise and lower my feeding devices. I have the hose over the fence and down into the bucket. They are still away. I saw a light on last night, so maybe some-one dropped in to attend to their needs, but I am sure the owners haven't returned yet. Bear is still barking a lot this evening. Tomorrow I will ring Council and ask for advice. I don't want the dogs taken away but they may be able give a severe warning to the owners when they eventually return. I appreciate your kind review.

It was an amazing story. Gave me chills. I am amazed at people's cruelty - how can human beings live the dogs behind when they go away. They should have been reported, but I understand your reasons for not doing it - they would be brought to a shelter, no doubt, and possibly euthanized. I don't know how matters stand with euthanazing in Australia, but here in America in municipal shelters it is allows if a shelter gets full. I've done animal rescue for over 10 years and know it for a fact.
I commend your kindness and humanity for feeding these dogs - without you they would have died. Like the humor in your describing the devices to put the foot and water in, your great imagery and visuals.
It was an amazing story. Thank you so much for sharing.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, and the honour of six stars. Much appreciated! The owners got back last night, but I have been out all day so haven't seen them. But I 'll be initiating what I hope will be a positive conversation as soon as I can. I feared they would be kept all day in kennels if I reported them, because they don't present as friendly (my first story "Poor Bear" you would "enjoy" having a look at). The first step would be a "no-kill shelter" for seven days while owners are contacted. If after fourteen days they are not claimed they move to a different shelter (!) or rehomed. Rehoming for these two with their current presentation, would be unlikely. So I am hoping that the owners will listen to reason edged with a bit of a warning. So sad for such dogs. These are intelligent dogs and if they were trained, and exercised and loved they would be wonderful!

How sad that they didn't even think to arrange for someone to check on their animals while they were gone. So irresponsible. I am glad that you were able to help the dogs though I'm not sure the owners will agree. Thanks for sharing. You'll have to let us know how it goes.

I hope to talk to the owners as soon as I can - it'll be an interesting conversation! They got back last night but I have been out all day so we'll see, maybe tomorrow or Wednesday. Thank you very much for your caring review.

I was hoping for a follow up Wendy. How terribly sad and now you feel bad for not acting earlier!
Those poor dogs, barking because they were hungry, thirsty, neglected. They were just trying to let you know.
What a difficult position you find yourself in...

Thanks so much Jacqueline. Lovely review. They were very glad to get a meal of chicken legs and kibble tonight. The owners have just returned, after being away for a week. I will be out tomorrow. But I will be interested to see if they notice the bucket of water and the food tray, and bother to say thank you. I will try to see them as soon as possible, maybe when I walk past with Sunny. They are around the corner from me. I will let them know I was on the pointof calling the ranger for the dogs to go to the animal shelter. Awkward and diffficult. Thanks again.

Thank you Valda. They are not bad dogs I don't think, despite all the barking and growling they were doing. I think they need food and water, love and kindness, and some exercise and training. They got them to be guard dogs apparently! I do appreciate your review.

That is so sad! Those poor dogs. How could anyone just go away without making arrangements for their precious animals to be taken care of? I would like to lock them up for a few days without food and water and see how they like it! Thank goodness that they have a compassionate and caring neighbor who stepped up.

I completely agree with you. If you can't bother to treat pets with love, care and commitment, you shouldn't have them.
