I think I just read the winning post in this contest. Memorable story beautifully written. Vic became real the readers before the letter announcing his death and he remained so afterward. Great job. ann

This sad, reflective, evocative story is told with such dignity intermingled with the sheer joy of living - can almost hear the strains of that beautiful song in the background-excellent

Oh what a very sad story. Yes, that song will always have special memories of a wonderful young man. You wrote your story in a way that the reader could see just how special he was. Best wishes for your entry.

Very nice story. Very well told. Nicely written.
I remember that song well, a good one.
I'm not sure that you fully explained the higher purpose that Victor's life served.
Best wishes and good luck in the contest.

Whiter Shade of Pale is a haunting song, especially so when paired with this real example of death which the song refers to. So much unfulfilled promise from a generation lost to a worthless war.

Oh wow, I am so sorry this young man was one of the fallen... What an incredibly sad story, and a horrible thing, the draft. You've told this story beautifully, Gretchen. Best of luck in the contest.

The feeling of a song can change with life. I'm sure it did when you found out he was killed, and you'll never hear it the same again. What a wonderfully written story.
Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Thank you for your understanding comments and wonderful review.

1967 was the year a Whiter Shade of Pale hit the charts. That was also, the Summer of Love when the hippie movement spread across the country--mostly from San Francisco. I had a 'Victor' in my life, too. Similar circumstances, but a few years earlier.
Your tribute to Victor is touching, and serves as a reminder of how much is lost by needless conflict.
Best of luck at the polls.

You did a great job incorporating that special song into your story,
Mystery Author. You gave readers a great sense of who Victor was
through your well-chosen words and descriptions. Your setting fit
in well with the song and the time period.
Best wishes in the contest, Jan

What a wonderfully beautiful story you have told. It has a depth of pathos that brings smiles, tears, joy, and sadness in its few paragraphs. An exceptional entry for this contest. Thank you for entering. Well-done. Terry.
