Your story struck a chord with me as I work with children with disabilities and it made me realise what families go through. I admire what you have done for Jobathon and great to hear he is doing so well.

Hadn't I read and commented previously regarding this story? Do comments made outside the voting booth not carry over? you and yours have led a most extraordinary life, sistah.

Your story is sad but also uplifting. I have nothing but admiration for someone in your position. There are so many children who need love and acceptance. Unfortunately, many individuals are unable to take on what you have and to love a child. God bless you and your family.

A most moving story! It says so much about so many people, things, just life, I guess. The imagery is magnificent and the love and the compassion comes shining through. Thanks for sharing. ann

What a lovely story, and told with such raw honesty. I'm an adoptive parent myself and, while my daughter has her own issues, I doubt I'd have had the courage to take on a child in your son's condition. I so greatly admire that you and your family did. He's very lucky to have made his way to such loving people - and kudos to your children for their reaction when you'd reached your limit. I love the lessons that you learned from your experience. This is a beautiful story, and I wish you luck in the contest.

Thank you Michelle. What a super encouraging review, and thank you for your good wishes. I like all the stories I have read for this contest and each is a story of courage and grit and overcoming. Everyone is a winner. It?s a hard road from any perspective but an enriching one for sure.

You took on a tremendously challenging adoption and triumphed. Just the fact that he has lived so long proves you rose to the challenge and saved him. You also raised children who understood about the need to care for everyone. The first time our ten-year-old didn't awaken us one night, we thought she died and raced to her room to find her asleep in her own bed. We know how hard sleep deprivation can be. You deserve those six stars for sticking it out.

Wendy,
Wow. I cannot imagine the time, love, and dedication this kind of fostering must take. I am pleased to see you were human - not a supermom that none of us could measure up to. Being normal - and handling this makes you seem much more real AND makes the story much more poignant. Thank you!

Thank you Robyn. Great review. Being honest and authentic is important to me. I was no supermom, just struggled on each day, trying to do my best for J without compromising on my care for the other three. It was not an easy ten years, but it was worthwhile.

Hi Wendy,
this one touched me a great deal. My daughter has special needs although she is verbal (most of the time) and very intelligent, it presents in different ways, such as aggressive outbursts.
I've spent almost 30 years working with children who needed extra help - behavioural issues, emotional issues, epilepsy, autism, deafness, learning difficulties, cerebral palsy, refugees, CSE, suicidal ideation to name a few! people don't understand it.
I used to get the funny looks because of my hair and beard, and piercings - book / cover and all that. i used to live-in with many of the kids too.
It's not an easy life, but then, when they are your own, it's even harder still.
I hope this one does well.
