This is so funny and I laughed so hard my husband was willing to listen to the story. He got a kick out of it also. I don't know if Scott is real but he's a great vehicle for your delightful stories. If Reader's Digest is still being published, have you ever considered submitting this to Life in These United States or even some other publication?

Thanks! I've been posting to online publications via medium.com.
Jim's official diagnosis is DSD--Dick-Spectrum Disorder.
The notes were short and to the point: Thanks for Thanksgiving; mark me down to Christmas.
As to the amount of the donation, I made up the number.

I didn't care for ole Jim throughout the story, but learning his family is happy to pay for his absence is unbelievable. Awesome on the donation though.
Hugs, Carol

I was just making a snarky joke about my invented psychiatric diagnosis of the obnoxious guy, and how his thank you note was mainly to reserve a slot for XMAS dinner. The gist of this story is true--I exaggerated the donation amount.

This is an excellent post, even for you. I don't know who I felt sorriest for, the rabbi or the would-be dessert eaters. Just happy that justice won out in the end!

Elizabeth, you darned well should be recognized for this gem. Jack wrote the notes, don't you think? Also, I wonder if Jim has a touch of autism. The post draws in the reader and never lets go. Jeff

I have a lot of exclamation marks on my review, also. I didn't realize their purpose. She gave me three stars, and that rating not consistent with he exclamation marks.
-
That's my point--she's using filler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--besides which, she duplicates the text!

Lol. A thanksgiving war story, he received battle pay!!!!!!!! Another nice twist at the end and a well-presented slice of life. You're like the Norman Rockwell of Story Land.

It is a well deserved cheque not for taking the miserable man off his family but for the great service he was doing to lonely people.
Hope he will be rewarded more...God.Bless him

I just loved this especially the last chapter which was just great. I think Scott deserved every cent for what he had put up with over the years. A very well written story which I say I really enjoyed thanks for sharing. Kooky.

Oh yeah, oh yeah! Hysterical and very well written. Great weirdness factor in the Jim character with his thank you notes. I would like more of an explanation as to why Jim's brother shows up out of the blue. Did Jim finally kick the mashed potato bucket. Is he dead, incapacitated or just vanish. Just a thought.

Hello Liz.
This is a pretty funny story. There have been times over the years I was in a similar situation. I'm just sorry I didn't think of that very effective program. The people I always wished not to see, never failed to show up.
However, being cheap, I would never have thought of paying a bounty to keep them away.
