I can see why you have been teaching for so long and continue to do so! I wish I had teachers like you, who could make a boring subject more interesting, instead of using intimidation as some do.

Just looking through your portfolio and reading randomly. I like your style.

Thank you so much, Judy. I try to always write from the heart, no matter the topic. Of course, God is my muse. Jan

Yes, you need to make leaning something they feel they can use in their lives. Many teachers don't understand that. I wish they did. It's a lot easier to reach the students. Thank you for sharing.

I cannot believe what I just read! When I was a first year teacher in 1970, I had fourth grade and got all the jocks. ALL they cared about as sports. I did exactly what you did and all my jocks loved it. Even the girls had fun with it! I don't think I'd get away with it now because of all the restrictions of keeping with the curriculum, but so exhilarating to read that someone out there "got their number!!" Six stars if I still had them.

Thanks so much, Susan. You can still do some creative things even with the standards but it is harder to take kids from where they are to the next step, which is a real shame. Rdfrdmom2

I enjoyed reading this chapter and can already see that you pulled straws to get the students excited about math. It was one of my least favourite classes, yet with this logical approach it might have been a bit more exciting.

Retrostarfish: When people tell me they hated math, I tell them they just didn't have the right math teacher.

Creative teaching method--well-written--clearly explicated--this would make for a fine real-life lesson plan. Brilliant! (I think in notes you mean pull strings vs straws.)

-Have been a teacher, I
am interested in what other
teachers write.
-This was a very creative
lesson plan and seemed to
motivate the class.
-It is nice when you can
accomplish that.
-I like how you went over the
problem with them, gave clear
directions, and a very good homework
assignment, too.
-It is very well written and interesting.
-Thanks for sharing it.

Hello again, my friend. This was a clever exercise to get cooperation, Jan. I can only imagine that when you come up with such homework, you got more cooperation and possibly higher scores. Good job with this little story, my friend. Bob

Oh that looks awful. Football is on at my house all Sunday but I'm glad I never made it into a math problem. Wowza! This is certainly a unique way to do it.

Yes, but my kids liked this more than regular math, so it worked. Rdfrdmom2

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

You are one great teacher. To take the time to figure out why each child was so far behind was a big undertaking. Everyone knows of a kid that was just passed through the grade levels because the teacher didn't want to deal with the kid. They left it to the next teacher. But then you hear of the teacher that goes above and beyond and tries to really connect with that child. They make movies about them! Can't wait for the next installment.

Real-World Math
I take it the students are learning math.
I can see why the student were anxious when they thought they were playing a game
My, what a great way how to Calculate the scores.

Thanks, Gert. I learned early on that kids do better when they think they are playing a game.
