This a quiet posting, noting the slight melancholy of a veteran seeing the names of others who did not survive to return to their former lives. The Rector is a charming break in the visitor's revery. His invitation is a perfect opportunity to further his queries. As always, it is a distinct pleasure to see an obvious effort to research a period piece including dress and mannerisms of speech. Thank goodness for perpetual archives that have these references in ready access from the internet. Books and movies from the period render the opportunity to review fashion in dress and speech as they were used then. Your effort is recognized and appreciated. Fantasist

Thank you for this review. The Internet is an amazing research tool with answers to most questions only a click away as opposed to a trip to the local library and trawling through all kinds of reference books.

Exceptional
This work has reached the exceptional level

I'm starting this one at the beginning Jim so you score the first six. I'll follow it right through and enjoy every word. I found no spags, though when I read I don't see mistakes. Sincerely Anne.

Thank you for this six star review. I hope you enjoy the experience of reading it through from start to finish. There are 47 posts involved altogether. Only 5 or six remain uncosted to date so I wonder who will finish first, you or me.

Well Jim I no sooner get started on a Ch 1 then something else crops up and suddenly it's ch21.

Jim, I did not read Book 1, but I have decided to start Book 2 from the beginning. It will take a while to catch up, but with the interesting plot I believe I will read most of it sooner rather than later. This promises to keep me interested.

I am so pleased you are intending to go back to the beginning of this book. Please do not feel you have to review every chapter, apart from the current active chapter every one has achieved ATB, which is quite remarkable really. Thank you for this one

I'm running behind, as I find I have little spare reading time this month (wonder why). I just hope I won't have to go back and read book one to follow book two.
I found this to be a tightly-written first chapter, with good description. The only exception to this was the first paragraph, which was wordy with a couple of redundancies (e.g. round the sharp bend in the road > round a sharp bend / A little further on, he was forced to change gear to climb the hill > very wordy).

Ia am most grateful for this review, and I know exactly what you mean, but I remain unrepentant. I dislike this tendency towards skeletal writing, which in my opinion removes the colour and comfort from a novel. Most plots can be summarised in a couple of pages but to what end. I want my readers to inhabit the world of my characters and come to terms with each bend in the road.

Oh my, this is exciting already. The mystery of what happened to Thomas Warburton! Can't wait to find out! Seek and ye shall find. I know that Colonel Allen has a lot to teach us.
I'm on the edge of my chair!

Thank you for sharing your story. It has suspense, curiosity, location and the past. Very well written. And great choice in characters to tell the story, I wish you all the best with your book.

Can't wait to read more. Your voice is great and I enjoy reading your work.
No fluff, no fancy verbiage...and all is according to time and place. Yet you also educate...giving us delicious parcels of information to feast on...
I will look forward to following this story as it develops.

-A great looking car.
-Thanks for all of the updates.
-A lot has certainly happened.
-I was surprised that Tom W. had
been in the service, although I
wonder if he volunteered or
if it was because of the draft.
-It was not surprising to learn
that he was not only well liked
but saved his commander's life.
-What a remarkable young man.
-Peter Allen definitely sets the
book up with an intriguing mystery.
-It sounds like we will learn more
of Tom and maybe his family as
he speaks with the vicar.

Many years ago back in the 1960s I had a friend whose hobby was restoring old cars. He had one of these. It was the experience of it that caused me to use it in this story.

Many thanks for this positive review.

Thanks for sharing about the car; it was a good looking one. You are very welcome for the review, too.

That was a really intersting start to this second book, Jim. Now you have set the stage, we will all be waiting to find out the real reason he wants to find the mystery woman. I wonder if the rector will be able to help him in his search. This was really well written and as a hook for the first page, you've done a great job. I look forward to tomorrows post. :) Sandra xx

Hello
A very good introduction to the characters of the next book. I like the way you weave these two together and of course the honesty shown by Allen.

I am sorry though, I am not a fan of a *, perhpas I am a snob, but footnotes with a 1, 2, 3, sit better with me.(It just feels more serious) and you probably would not use them when this gets published.
Mind you, I didn't need them and knew the words and their meanings.

okay my two cents worth.

Please get writing, I want to see this develope:-)

Stay safe.

I have yet to find a way of referring to footnotes on FS other than with stars. I certainly won't be using those in any published form. Thank you for taking the time and trouble to read and review this.
