In dark of night, I woke with fright.
Hair stood on end… horrific yowling,
wailing of wild banshee howling,
sounding like death’s deeds were done.
Best stay indoors ’til comes bright sun.
I noticed that my bed was cold;
fearfully, grave thoughts took hold.
My dearest companion, not by my side.
Is this the night she died?
I went outside to call my cat,
than stood on something… My God! What’s that?
It squished between my toes, still bleeding,
twitching, torn, it’s life receding.
I flicked on a light and saw the sight:
my darling cat had brought a rat.
