Now Is the Winter by Bill Schott 100 Word Flash Fiction contest entry |
It was the winter morning of his discontent. Four siblings were gone, in the space of a year. His older brothers had passed in succession: lung cancer, blood clots, leukemia. Now, his sister had died, alone at home, of natural causes. He was the youngest of five; the sole survivor of his family's generation. Then, his electronic tablet vibrated, and a cheery melody, associated with Sesame Street, played. Answering with a press of a button, he saw a darling cherub, smiling with delight, beaming into his breakfast nook. "Hi, Gwampa!" chirped the bright face, making glorious summer by this sun.
