Now Is the Winter by Bill Schott
100 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

It was the winter morning of his discontent. Four siblings were gone, in the space of a year.

His older brothers had passed in succession: lung cancer, blood clots, leukemia. Now, his sister had died, alone at home, of natural causes.

He was the youngest of five; the sole survivor of his family's generation.

Then, his electronic tablet vibrated, and a cheery melody, associated with Sesame Street, played. Answering with a press of a button, he saw a darling cherub, smiling with delight, beaming into his breakfast nook.

"Hi, Gwampa!" chirped the bright face, making glorious summer by this sun.

Author Notes
Now is the winter of our discontent
Made glorious summer by this sun of York;
And all the clouds that lour'd upon our house
In the deep bosom of the ocean buried.
Now are our brows bound with victorious wreaths;
