In New Zealand the murdering mosque gunman was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole. That’s a long time to think over his failure. His actions reinforced love, not hatred and division as he’d intended. The arms of compassion wrapped around our Muslim community. Friends, neighbours, classmates, workmates: they are us.

The photo shows Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand's Prime Minister, hugging a woman in the aftermath of the Christchurch mosque shootings last year, in which 51 were killed and many others wounded. The gunman's trial was held this week; the sentence passed down on him was the longest in NZ's legal history.
