My childhood began in 1941
Oldest of three, the first son
Lived in an apartment on Ashland Avenue
Hated when mom washed my hair with shampoo
Went to St. Raphael’s catholic grammar school
In kindergarten finally learned to tie my shoe
Moved to a house on Sacramento Avenue
Started second grade at St. Gall’s catholic school
Argued with my brother now and then
Until my mom yelled, “Bring it to an end.”
Tried the piano, but that didn’t work
Practicing that thing drove me berserk
There was other fun stuff to do
Especially playing with my guy crew
Got glasses for a while called, "four eyes"
Did the usual kid things, captured fireflies
Road a bike and played Kick the Can
In when the streetlights came on was mom’s plan
