What Every Woman Knows by Mary Furlong
Along came a Spider... writing prompt entry

A Black Widow Spider has venom inside her,
Belying her charming exterior,
Though not for her prey. at least, not today,
But for rivals (and more makes for merrier) --

The girls who've discovered that she's chocolate covered
Are legion. They sure have her number.
But what good's it do ya to say, "We see through ya,"
When she remains quite the cucumber.

Which means kinda cool, as if any old fool
Would mistake her for being in style.
The grand Me-too movement to her ain't improvement.
She favors a wink and a smile.

Her Good Housekeeping label beats cards-on-the-table
At keeping the suckers in line,
And a word to the wise to those gullible guys
Goes over like pearls before swine.

Oh, it seems so unfair, the way she can snare
The best of the Toms and the Harrys
And the whats-his-names, too, (Oh, come on. You know who)
In spite of their best thrusts and parries.

She comes out the winner when they come to dinner,
Not knowing she'll eat them alive.
And it comes as a blow when you finally know
That on venom, some fellows will thrive.

But let's not be hasty. Some guys who look tasty
Like heroes on all the old Soaps
May end up as losers, or liars, or boozers.
Forgive me. One clings to one's hopes.
