I think the old song was amiss,
That said, “a kiss is just a kiss,”
The song is called, “As Time Goes By.”
But I remember back when I
Was young and kisses were supreme –
Romantic—as if in a dream;
The kind that made me starry-eyed,
The kind so sweet, I almost cried.
When I was very young, we played
Spin the Bottle – in third grade,
Or maybe fourth, but it was fun,
Although embarrassing for some,
Because the “kisser” never knew
Who the bottle would point to.
We also had “Prom Parties” which
Never went without a hitch:
Birthday parties held at night,
Thirty minute “dates” that might
Give each couple time to walk
Around the block and actually talk,
Then come back “home” and start anew
Until the last date--someone who
Was special and you knew that you
Would get a kiss, or maybe two.
I guess, you’d say we started young;
I guess we did, but it was fun.
Not surprisingly, we got
The boys to show up on the dot—
The food served was so good, you see,
We knew they would RSVP.
As we grew older, kisses meant
A boy’s ring or pin was “lent”
And “going steady” was the phrase
We went by in those heady days.
Kisses given with more passion
Early marriage was the fashion
But I got a job in Texas
Where I met, through lucky nexus
Someone who I’d hitch up with,
Someone who I loved to “kith.”
