Many memories to choose from,
many pictures of the past.
They bring a smile to me,
captured moments made to last.
Chicago, as a child, seemed
magical to me.
At least the trips we took downtown
to see what we could see.
Museum trips the favorite,
of my brother Bob and me.
The Museum of Science and Industry
had an old-time street inside.
With storefronts, sidewalks paved with brick,
on which we all could stride.
It also had an antique car
in which we got to sit.
Pretending we were driving,
to us kids, it was a hit.
One day, while there with mama,
how pleased it made me feel,
someone was taking pictures
of families behind the wheel.
Of course, there's just one driver's seat,
I thought it would be me,
to sit and pretend to drive the car.
But it was not to be!
Mama let my brother drive,
he was the "older" child I guess.
But I was feeling very sad,
quite pouty I must confess.
The photo evidence is all there,
undisputed I would say.
Biting my lip, trying not to cry,
disappointed on that day.
This memory stands out for me,
I'm not really sure why.
Maybe it was just a perfect day,
for my mother, brother, and I.
EXCEPT for the whole car incident!
(unjust I really must say!)
I was happy to be with my family,
on that memory-making day.
Now as I stand and gaze,
at this photo in my hand.
I get the feeling some won't know,
but others will understand.
For both my mom and brother,
now sleep eternally.
Leaving behind this photograph,
a precious memory.
It briefly brings them back again,
my loving family.
