Author Notes
The SIRENS of Greek mythology (especially in Homer's Odyssey) were originally conceived of as half-bird and half-woman, but they gradually shifted to the image of a fish-tailed woman. A MERMAID is the name that evolved for the aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a female human and the tail of a fish. MERMAIDS appear in the folklore of many cultures worldwide, including the Near East, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Some attributes of Homer's SIRENS, such as the enticement of sailors with their beautiful song, remains attached to MERMAIDS.
