My Three Musketeers by Y. M. Roger 100 Word Flash Fiction writing prompt entry |
It was almost midnight, and I was exhausted. Rounding a sharp curve, I noticed a dead animal. As I passed, six pin-pricks of light appeared over the top of the body. Every work-centered instinct told me to keep going – I still had work to finish at home. Alone. Pulling over, I walked back to the dead calico – her three kittens watching me from behind her. I sighed, took off my blazer, and wrapped the needle-clawed bandits in it. Next morning, the vet just smiled and handed the trio back to me saying, “Athos, Parthos, and Aramis are ready … dad!”
