Penny Penelope Applebee
took a trip with her mother down to the sea.
Collecting shells of all color and size,
to string together and make a surprise.
Their neighbor Rose always treated them nice,
gave them gifts from her gardens,
jars of sugar and spice.
Penny wanted to give her pretty shells to wear,
on a string around her neck, on a clip for her hair.
So her father drilled holes in each little shell,
mother braided some colorful silk strands quite well.
Then they made a hair clip that would match perfectly,
they wanted to make neighbor Rose so happy!
It was placed in a box with yellow ribbon on top,
yellow was the color neighbor Rose liked a lot.
Then Penny and her mother invited her for tea,
And gave her the gift they made so lovingly.
Rose's eyes flew wide open,
then they filled up with a tear.
"She must not like it" Penny thought
and her heart filled with fear.
But Rose hugged Penny tight
and her mother too.
"I'm so happy" she said
"And it's all cause of you."
Then mother hugged Penny,
and her eyes filled with pride.
Penny learned a great lesson,
and felt good inside.
Making other people happy
is the best thing, it's true.
Being kind and respectful
is the right thing to do.
