Four of us lived in a three room place
Prettied up by windows hung with lace
Living room had a convertible couch
Made up, it looked like a kangaroo’s pouch
Bedroom was for Mom and Dad
Time out area if we did something bad
Apartment was on the second floor
Bakery below at 6 AM opened its door
At 4 AM the wafting of fresh baking bread
By 5 AM my bro and I were out of our bed
Summer, roll away beds on the back porch
No pajamas, just slept in tee-shirts and shorts
On really hot nights we rolled our beds outside
On the walled-in deck, we slept side by side
We would talk and watch the darkening night sky
Moon rising high, night birds flying, as clouds rolled by
We left the place when I was in first grade
Memories from there that I wouldn’t trade
