I can’t believe we’re meant to sink our hearts in misery
and live our time, day in, day out, in silent liturgy
of things gone wrong and loves foregone and hopes not realized,
and not see all the blessings, sometimes hidden or disguised.
There’s so much sadness in this world, sometimes the joy eludes
our notice when we’re sunk in gloom with troubles we’ve accrued.
But then I look around and see that happiness prevails.
Good attitude, a hopeful heart will tear away the veils
designed to keep our focus from the joyousness of days,
and overlook the merest things deserving of our praise.
A baby’s laugh, an old friend met, an unexpected smile
exemplify the simple things that make a day worthwhile.
