Never Taunt a Tiger by RodG 200 Word Story writing prompt entry |
"I want a new deck . . . Now!" screamed the obnoxious redhead at my table in La Vacanza's casino.
When Nick, the pit boss, nodded, I broke a deck, shuffled and dealt. Smirking, she flipped over two face cards. "Beat that," she said. I did. An ace and a ten. .She glared. "You're cheating!" "No . . . I'm not." My words were whispered. "Liar! I'm leaving." I watched her stalk to another table. "Bitch over there cheats and lies." Her voice carried across the vast room. She should have left it at that. But she didn't. After my shift I went to Chica's, a small Mexican take-out on the main level of the hotel. "You buy that burrito with what you stole, Bitch?" the redhead said. I'm sure she'd followed me. I said nothing but left. Jabbering more insults, she followed me into a little-used stairwell. The door closed behind us. I stopped on a landing and faced her. "You've gone too far." "What? I didn't mean--" She stared at the gun now in my hand and its silencer. "La Tigre's credo: Don't taunt a tiger!" Her eyes widened when she saw me smile. My only shot slammed her to the floor.
