Unleashed Chaos : The Battle Begins/Part Three by scongrove |
Warning: The author has noted that this contains the highest level of violence. Previously... After Steven—Tessa’s fraternal twin brother—connects with Tessa telepathically and finds her location, the Breedline Covenant prepare to rescue her and take down Sebastian Crow. But before they come up with a plan, Sebastian uses his powers to create a portal and kidnaps his son Arius and Mia. When the Breedline find out they are missing, something triggers the outside alarms. While viewing the security cameras, they are shocked when dozens of Dr. Crane’s unearthly creations of Breedline hybrids topple over the gates and surround the Covenant. Meanwhile, Thomas Carlyle—Sebastian’s twin brother—is threatened by Dr. Crane. With no other choice, Thomas lies to Sebastian and turns over Tessa and Lilith—Tessa’s biological mother—to the evil physician for research. And now, Thomas must continue to betray his own brother. Left with no other choice, the Breedline go up against Dr. Crane’s hybrids in battle in order to defend their Covenant. During the battle, the Breedline are hit with grenades, knocking everyone unconscious except for Steven, Jem, and Casey. While Sebastian and Thomas escape through the portal, taking Jace with them, the rest of the Breedline regains consciousness and takes Samuel Mercier—a Breedline traitor who is helping Thomas—into custody. Using his powers, Arius took Eve and his twin brother Tidus to the room Sebastian had Mia sedated. After Arius surrounded Mia with his healing powers, he took them to the safety of the Breedline Covenant. When Sebastian found Eve’s note she’d left behind telling him good-bye, he was desperate to get her back. But that had to be put on the back burner. Now that the Breedline had their location, Sebastian and his twin brother had no choice but to go with Dr. Crane’s men when they came for Jace and hide out at the research facility where they had taken Tessa and her mother Lilith. As Dr. Crane forces Jace—who is drugged and chained—to his research facility, he demands him to bring forth his Beast. When Jace refuses to give in, the evil physician orders his men to punish Jace with a whip made of silver. Enduring the torture, Jace continues to resist. But when Dr. Crane threatens to harm Tessa, his anger fuels within him, unleashing the Beast. With a compelling desire to save his beloved, the Beast breaks free of his restraints and attacks his enemies. Managing to elude the Beast’s attack, Dr. Crane orders his hybrids to be released. Meanwhile, as Casey and Kyle finally find Tessa—who is unconscious and barely breathing—and her mother Lilith—who appears unconscious inside a plastic, cylinder tube—Sebastian and Thomas catch them off guard. With a gun held to Kyle’s head, and a knife to Casey’s throat, time is ticking as the rest of the Breedline fight in battle alongside the Beast against the hybrids. Continued... Tim watched with dismay as the hybrid horde charged at the Beast, howling like ravenous wolves. The Beast leaped into the air as though he was fired from a catapult, landing in the middle of at least a dozen hybrids. Outnumbered, he relied on speed and savagery to try to even the odds. Blood spurted from their hides as the Beast slashed fiercely with his dagger-size claws, sending two wounded hybrids to their death. A hybrid from the rear attacked, sinking its jaws into the Beast’s shoulder with razor-sharp canines, producing a blinding explosion of pain. He stumbled forward onto all fours, scraping his claws on the rough concrete floor. Several hybrids lunged from above, their weight pinning him down and ripping savagely at his flesh with their claws and teeth. The Beast’s urgent roar commanded Tim’s attention. Looking away from the carnage, just for an instant, he pivoted in time to see the murderous look on Jem’s face. “We’ve got to help him!” Jem shouted. He paused to let his words sink in. Everyone’s eager expressions were truly honorable, and Jem experienced a moment of triumph even though the battle had just begun. Drakon’s skin itched as though bristling fur was scratching at it from the inside. Thick, wiry black hairs sprouted from his skin, and his teeth tugged painfully at the roots. He felt his incisors longer and sharper than before as he raked his tongue over his top lip. “I’m going to have to change,” Tim said to Jem as he handed him the radio. “You’ll need this to keep in contact with Kyle.” Jem nodded. “Let’s do this,” he said, clipping the small radio to his belt. Ready for war, Tim embraced the wolf within him. His frame swelled to massive proportions, shredding his constricted clothes until black fur covered his nakedness. As a canine snout protruded from his face, sharp teeth filled his gaping jaws. They hesitated only for a heartbeat before the change came upon them instantly as they shifted into their Breedline wolves while Jem kept his powerful human form. Tim and Drakon belatedly rushed to the Beast’s defense, racing toward the hybrids with an appetite for vengeance—against Dr. Crane’s creation of monstrosity. Drakon growled more deeply than any other Breedline as he shot into the air and lunged into battle like a bat freshly released from hell. Pinning a hybrid with his massive paws, it barely had time to squirm before Drakon’s jaws closed around its head, crushing its skull in an explosion of blood and brains. Exploding into action, Tim barreled past him and swiped his mammoth-size paw, knocking one of the hybrids from the Beast. The jarring impact sent the hybrid tumbling a distance away. Rising from underneath the pack, Jace’s great seven-foot Beast roared, baring his bloody canines. With hellfire burning in his eyes, his inner voice screamed, Kill them all! In the fury of his rage, the Beast left dead, twitching hybrids in his wake. He could taste their throats and feel their flesh embedded under his claws. At the same time, Steven felt the blood drain from his face and a wave of nausea. His eyes shifted from their emerald green to a brilliant white as if the irises had turned into two glowing bright lights. He embraced the change into his altered form—a powerful human hybrid—his lips pulled back in a teeth-baring grimace as he lurched forward, and vanished in a flash. Every cell in Steven’s body ached to put an end to Dr. Crane’s hybrids. Jem merely stared aghast as he witnessed an unforgettable scene of carnage right before his own eyes. Steven lunged out and grabbed one of the hybrids by the torso and flipped it to the ground. Before the monstrous hybrid could get up, he stomped on its head, nailing him down. Steven was in control of himself, at ease in the violence once again. And his cold, calm expression disturbed the hell out of Jem as he heard the crack of the hybrid’s skull. Steven was... death. Which, considering he was on their side and they needed his help, that was a good thing. Jem’s jaw tightened, and he squared his shoulders, tensing to attack. As he extended his arm, he took aim, careful not to hit his comrades, and blasted a lightning rod straight from the palm of his hand. As it made contact, the glowing shock waves hit two hybrids, sending them to their death in a full strike. And ready to serve up another round, Jem palmed out another blast of rolling energy, taking out three more. **** The only sound in the room was the creak of the cylinder tube that held Lilith, and Casey’s blood pounding in his ears. With the knife close to his jugular, Casey carefully shifted his eyes, looking out of the corners and met Kyle’s stare. A look of unease passed over Kyle’s face, and his eyes were wide and full of apprehension. He was pale, so pale... as if he’d seen a ghost. “Put her back down,” Sebastian said to Kyle. “If you try anything stupid, your buddy here will pay the price.” Kyle obeyed Sebastian’s orders. As soon as Tessa’s body was gently placed back on the padded table, Kyle straightened his spine, raising his chin and glared viciously at Sebastian. “She needs medical attention,” Kyle said, his voice laced with concern. “Something could be wrong with her babies.” Sebastian smirked. “So?” “For God’s sake!” Kyle barked. “At least let her brother try to heal her. Is that so much to ask, or is your heart that dark?” Thomas popped a brow and interjected, “Steven is here?” “Yes,” Kyle quickly replied. “I can use my radio to call for him now.” Thomas nodded thoughtfully, as though he were weighing Kyle’s words. “Call for him,” he said, and then added, “but only Steven. If he brings anyone else, Sebastian will cut your boyfriend’s throat.” Kyle slowly reached into his jacket, and when he brought his hand back, he produced a miniature walkie-talkie. “Tim, do you copy?” he said into the receiver and waited. Growing with impatience, Kyle repeated, “Tim, do you copy?” After a few more minutes had passed, waiting in the silence, Kyle seethed in frustration. “I don’t understand,” he said. “Something must be wrong.” “Looks like your friends might have finally met their end,” Sebastian said mockingly. “They were probably outnumbered.” His lips curved up into a bow. “I mean, how could they possibly take on all those hybrids?” “Go to hell,” Kyle spat. Sebastian pursed his lips and pressed the blade deeper into Casey’s flesh until it drew a few drops of blood. “Maybe I should get it over with and cut his throat now,” he threatened. Kyle’s eyes widened as he stared past Casey with a look of horror, and not just because he feared for his friend’s life—it was something far more terrifying. “What the—” Noticing the expression on Kyle’s face, Thomas turned to look, keeping the weapon aimed at Kyle. Immediately he lowered the pistol and shrank back. “Lilith,” he gasped. Sebastian loosened his grip on the blade and turned to see what was behind him. With a mix of fear and worship stamped on his face, he muttered, “What on earth—” Surrounded by a blaze of fire, as if she had fallen into the heart of the sun, Lilith stood before them. It was if she simply had awakened by a magical force. Her hand went to her heart, feeling the thrum under her fingers. And then she lowered her head, her eyes clenching in sadness at the sight of Tessa. Soon after, the sad expression in Lilith’s gaze turned to rage. “Who has done this to my child?” Thomas was breathing in pants as he turned away from Lilith, his eyes fixed on the door, his face as white as chalk. He looked as if he wanted nothing more than to turn and run. Sebastian glanced at Kyle once, a look of surprise and disdain, before shifting his focus back to Thomas. “If you run, I’ll turn this blade on you,” he threatened through gritted teeth. “Do something, you coward!” Thomas was still, his eyes wide open but unfocused. His hand hung limply at his sides. He slowly moved forward until he was standing directly in front of Lilith. With a sigh, Thomas went to his knees and clasped his hands in front of him, almost as if he was praying. “It was only ever my desire,” Thomas said, his voice trembling, “to serve you, Lilith.” Sebastian made a rude noise. “What are you doing, Thomas?” his voice seethed as he looked to his brother, to Lilith, and back to his brother again. “Why are you kneeling to her?” Thomas’s eyes flashed, and he scrambled to his feet. “Lilith is a God,” he praised. “If you were wise, you would all kneel too.” A sizzling bolt of hatred went through Sebastian. He wanted to remove the knife from Casey’s throat and stab Thomas instead. “I kneel to no one,” Sebastian ground out. Lilith’s eyes burned with a sulfuric glow. A bolt of red fire shot from them and hit the wall beside Sebastian, scorching the stone. “Release the Theriomorph,” she demanded. Lowering the blade, Sebastian released Casey and peered uncertainly at him, more intimidated than impressed by Casey’s real identity. “I don’t believe it,” Sebastian challenged him. “The Breedline would never let you into their Covenant knowing you’re a Theriomorph.” No longer afraid of hiding his secret, Casey embraced his Theriomorph within him. “There’s a lot you don’t know about the Breedline,” Casey said, his eyes casting a lavender glow. “Even though I’m different, they still accept me as their family. Something you could never comprehend.” “Who is responsible for bringing us here?” Lilith demanded. “Tell me who has betrayed me.” Sebastian opened his mouth, but seeing Thomas’s warning look, closed it again. Lilith looked between Sebastian and Thomas, her confusion and fury mounting by the minute. “Answer me!” she shouted. Sebastian’s gaze met Thomas’s. He could tell Thomas wanted to keep Dr. Crane from Lilith, fearing she would find out he’d betrayed her. Thomas had been planning all this time to turn Tessa and Steven over to the ruthless physician. “Dr. Hubert Crane,” Sebastian said, and his voice was firm. “But he is not the only one who is involved.” Thomas’s yellow eyes flashed, his mind whirling. Dear God, was his own twin brother about to snitch on him and reveal to Lilith the truth? With his narrowed eyes on Sebastian, Thomas pursed his lips and slightly shook his head, silently threatening him to keep his mouth shut. “Thomas and Dr. Crane are working together,” Sebastian finished. He felt, for a moment, something almost like satisfaction for ratting out his brother. He had disliked Thomas all this time, had hated the way he treated Eve, especially after she’d taken off as if searching for her was a waste of his time. For a moment Thomas stood perfectly still, staring at his brother. Then without a word, he turned gentle eyes on Lilith. “He’s lying!” he ground out. Fear made his voice crack. “Please Lilith,” he pleaded, lowering his head. “I swear I never meant to turn against you. Dr. Crane threatened me. I had no other choice.” She turned to Sebastian for confirmation, but his cold stare said it all. As she shifted her gaze, Lilith’s nostrils flared, and she snarled in Thomas’s direction, the person who’d sworn to help her defeat Dr. Crane and his colleagues. But all the time he was using her to draw Tessa and Steven out. The very thing she’d feared the most had come to pass. She’d trusted Thomas as she’d never thought to trust another person, and he’d betrayed her. “How could I have been so foolish?” she muttered under her breath. The whispered words came out in a painful rush. Thomas flinched and raised his glittering gaze to her. “Please—” “You will pay for your betrayal—” Lilith was cut off by an eruption as the walls cracked, sending dust whirling in all directions. The distant sound of a gun firing echoed, and she stood there, stunned as she stared down at the disarray scattered before her. Casey and Kyle both lunged for Tessa at the same time, shielding her from the falling debris. Thomas’s body lurched forward, leaping in front of Lilith as another shot sounded and he grunted in pain. “Take cover!” Casey roared as he helped Kyle get Tessa off the examination table and onto the floor. Sebastian dropped to his knees, but he couldn’t see or hear what was going on. Gunfire sounded loud in his ears, deafening him to all else. He sucked in a breath as he glanced at the floor to see Thomas lying motionless, blood trickling from his mouth. To be continued...
