100 Word Flash Fiction contest entry

"Do you know what the difference is between killing and murder, Mr. Prosecutor?"

"No, Mr. Riley.  Why don't you explain it to me?

"Intimacy, sir, intimacy.  Killing is impersonal.  Soldiers kill the enemy because they are fighting for their country.  They use guns, maybe a bayonet, but murder's something you do up close and personal.

"When you murder someone, you want to see the life drain out, and see their eyes go blank. The most intense type of murder is by strangulation."

The judge peered down.

"With my hands around her neck, I felt her pulse slow and eventually stop."
