We Are Proud Canadians
by
Dawn Munro

We're a hundred and fifty years young this year,
so rise up Canadians, let's hear your cheer
from mountainous coast to the isle with the clam.
(That's Prince Edward Island, the birthplace of Anne...)

There’s Thunder Bay amethyst, dinosaur digs,
Saskatchewan hoodoos, and great sailing rigs.
There’s even some land that the ice age dismissed,
with scorpion spiders –  they really exist!

Come, soak up our syrup, it's maple tree's pride,
or head to Alberta - wild horses to ride!
Fry up some bacon - it's pea meal today -
'cause that's the delicious, Canadian way.

Let's hear about bison, and beavers, and bears -
our cultural centres and sweet country fairs...
the icebergs that float off of Newfoundland's coast -
those Newfies, so friendly, were glad to play host

to passengers stranded when terrorists struck .
American visitors showed lots of pluck
in spite of the tragic events going on -
the loved ones they knew were forever now gone.

Let's show what we're made of, let's stand side by side
with patriots here, and with ones far and wide.
We're known as the peacekeepers over the globe,
yet though we are humble, I ask you to probe

and find what we need to proclaim and to boast,
Armed Forces are guarding our every coast,
and we join our forces with USA too,
so terrorists never again will get through!

We're a hundred and fifty years young this year -
no maniac murderers will make us fear.
We're having a party, and welcome good friends!
Canadian kindness and love never ends.

Author Notes
I wrote the poem back in March of this year, but I took the photographs at the King and Spadina streetcar stop (in Toronto, Ontario) last night - July 1, 2017.

"Anne" refers to the wonderful tale of "Anne of Green Gables". The house still stands, and it is a major tourist attraction for folks visiting this charming province.

Yep - 'honour', spelled the Canadian way, is 'ou', centre isn't 'er' either - *grin*
Thank you for reading - as always! Come celebrate with us this year.
