Memories
The old gate's hanging open
Like it always did
His mind's now much the same
Memories are struggling to stay alive
There's no heat where once there was flame
The cows are long gone
The paddocks are bare
As is the tree where we kids would climb
Memories are lost in a haze that's unfair
It's like poetry that's begging for rhyme
Off to Nanna's and Pa's
Every second weekend
Two hours of fighting cramped in a car
Memories don't mean nothing no more
There's no close, things now are so far
She opened the door
Let yesterday in
Saw a smile rise on his face
Memory is here, it'll be gone in a flash
Replaced by an empty meaningless space
Now yesterday's faded
The friends are still there
In his mind he's alone in his room
Memory loss is such a sad cruel thing
It brings death long before there's a tomb

Author Notes
This is a rewrite of a poem posted previously. I was never quite happy with the original version. In a sense it is the story of my father-in-law
