Remembered Promises by Spiritual Echo 200 Word Story writing prompt entry |
The day came when I uttered a few words and reeled in shock. "I sound just like my mother," I said to the mirror while inspecting my image, looking for clues that would differentiate me from the mean-spirited woman whom I called Mama. The realization I might have fallen into a learned habit of criticism, I tried to find creative ways to parent, but I was never sure whether anything I ever told children had any impact. When Alexandra, my girlfriend's daughter, was three years old, she went through a stage, repeating everything she heard; cute, but dangerous. Exploiting this phase, and knowing full well I could drive my friend nuts, I told Alexandra she was my special friend, and she had an important job when I got old to bring me specific gifts. For weeks, she walked around chanting 'scotch and cigarettes'. My own son grew up and had children. Alas, he never echoed my creative phrases, reverting back to traditional threats and bribery as discipline tools. Devastated, I thought all was lost, until... Alexandra, grown into a gorgeous young woman, paid me a surprise visit recently bearing gifts--scotch and cigarettes--and validation. I love you too, Alexandra.
